# SafetyMap

> Crime and safety scores for every administrative level of Greece: 52 regional units, 333 municipalities and 6,356 neighbourhoods, each scored 0–100 for overall, property and violent crime.

Scores are absolute, not ranks. 50 is the Greek national police-recorded
offence rate and every doubling of the rate costs a fixed number of points, so
a score means the same thing everywhere and two places in different regions can
be compared directly. **Higher is safer.** In words: 91+ exceptionally low
crime, 80+ very low, 63+ below average, 43+ average, 20+ above average, below
20 high.

**What is measured and what is not.** Regional units are scored from Eurostat's
police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants — real reported figures.
Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipality and neighbourhood scores are
*modelled*: the region's measured rate is split among its children by how
built-up they are and by documented local reporting, in a way that always adds
back up to the region's real figure. Every page states which it is showing, and
the `measured` property in the data files marks it. A municipality or
neighbourhood score is an estimate, not a count of reported crime — please say
so when you quote one.

Coverage is Greece only, 6,741 places in total. Data is static between deploys; there is no live feed.

## URL scheme

Every place has one page per crime layer, and the URL is built from slugs alone:

`{crime}` is one of `overall` (crime and safety), `property-crime` (property crime), `violent-crime` (violent crime). Each segment after it may be dropped from the
right to address a coarser level, so all four of these are real pages:

A slug must sit under its real parent: a neighbourhood addressed under the
wrong municipality returns 404 rather than a page that contradicts itself.
Swapping the leading segment keeps the place and changes the layer.

Every page also exists in Greek, Russian, French and Spanish, at the same path
behind a language prefix — `/el/…`, `/ru/…`, `/fr/…`, `/es/…`; English is unprefixed.
The scores are the same in every language. The written neighbourhood notes are
in English on every version.

## Data files

GeoJSON `FeatureCollection`s, one per level, served as static files. Each
feature carries the scores in its properties (`overall`, `property`,
`violent`, all 0–100), plus `slug`, `name`, `nameEl` (Greek), `population`,
`density`, `measured`, and the ancestor slugs (`regionSlug`, `citySlug`)
needed to build a page URL. Prefer these over crawling when you want many
places at once; prefer the page when you want one.
