Exarcheia is the university and counterculture quarter north-east of Omonia, between the Polytechneio, the National Archaeological Museum and the Lycabettus slopes. Publishing houses, bookshops, rembetiko tavernas, the Saturday market on Kallidromiou and the self-managed Navarinou park sit alongside squats, anarchist graffiti and a heavy standing police presence. Exarcheia Square itself has been fenced off for years as a Metro Line 4 worksite, and the fight over it is the neighbourhood's defining public argument.
De noche
Cafes and tavernas fill and the streets stay populated; the square, boarded and floodlit, does not. Drug dealing and the odd flare-up with police are real, and weekend late nights around the square are the time to be elsewhere.

- Exarcheia Square is a fenced Metro Line 4 worksite; residents' mobilisations there have drawn riot police, including on 15 February 2026 when protesters briefly breached the fence
- Demonstrations cluster on predictable dates - 17 November (Polytechneio) and 1 May are the big ones

Visit for an afternoon and dinner rather than booking a bed. Hotels are few and basic, and while daytime Exarcheia is genuinely interesting, first-time visitors get more from Koukaki or Plaka twenty minutes away.
Fama y realidad. This is the biggest reputation-versus-reality gap in Athens, and it runs both ways. The 'no-go anarchist zone' framing is years out of date - the worst of the police-anarchist street battles are over, boutique hotels have arrived on the edges, and the city froze new tourist-rental registrations here in January 2025 precisely because it had become desirable. What has not softened is the drug trade: 2026 saw both a dealer-network raid and a targeted shooting. The right summary is 'gentrifying and interesting by day, still a drug market at night', not 'dangerous' and not 'fine'.
