What's new
Every change a reader can see, newest first: new notes, new figures and corrections to the scores. The police figures are updated when Eurostat publishes a new year.
Five more places: Athens suburbs and Amorgos
Koropi, Dafni-Ymittos, Aspropyrgos, Keratsini-Drapetsona and the island of Amorgos have written notes of their own, each with its sources. The Spanish pages now ask whether a place is safe in words that agree with every place name.
Notes on towns and islands, and four years of police figures
Chania, Heraklion, Rhodes, Corfu and other towns and islands people ask about now have a written note of their own, with its sources: what the place is like, what changes after dark, what to watch for and where to stay. Every regional unit's page now shows its police-recorded crime year by year, 2021 to 2024, next to Greece as a whole, and a new guide asks whether crime is rising, region by region. Place pages now open with their text under a shorter map.
Each regional unit's own police figures
Every regional unit's page lists its Eurostat figures offence by offence — burglary, theft, vehicle theft, assault, robbery and homicide — against the rate for Greece and with its rank among the regions. Every score now says whether it is measured from police records, apportioned from Attica's total, or modelled.
Five guides to the figures, and a correction
Five guides explain what the police figures say: crime by region, property crime, violent crime, the islands and the largest cities. Property crime scores were corrected the same day: vehicle theft is part of theft in Eurostat's figures and had been counted twice.
Neighbourhood notes in five languages
The written neighbourhood notes for Athens, Piraeus, Thessaloniki, Kalamaria, Pavlos Melas, Neapoli-Sykies, Kordelio-Evosmos and Patras are now in Greek, English, Russian, French and Spanish. A neighbourhood has a page of its own once it has a note; the rest are on the map.
SafetyMap goes live
A 0–100 safety score for every regional unit, municipality and neighbourhood of Greece, for overall, property and violent crime, on one map, from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates.
