Crime and safety in Koropi

Κορωπί · Municipality

Modelled estimate — how it is made
63/100

By type of crime

Koropi scores 63 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 30,307 people (2021 census), 264 per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Koropi is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

Koropi is the seat of the municipality of Kropia, east of Mount Hymettus, 16 km south-east of central Athens and 8 km south-west of Athens airport. The town had 20,152 residents in 2021; the municipality also takes in Karellas to the north, Kitsi to the south-west, and Agia Marina and Agios Dimitrios on the Saronic Gulf coast. Olympic Air has its head office here and Panathinaikos has trained here since summer 2013. An estate agent's guide describes Agia Marina as thinly populated, with large houses, shops strung along the main roads and a mostly organised beach with beach bars. Koropi station (Metro Line 3 and the suburban railway) and the Attiki Odos link the area to Athens and the airport. Laikimap lists a Tuesday farmers' market in Koropi, currently on Vasileiou I. Adam Street (the street rotates), and a Saturday one on Taxiarchon in Agia Marina.

After dark

The documented evening risk here is the roads rather than the streets. A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car on Athens-Sounio Avenue near Kekropos Street at about 19:20 on a Tuesday in late August 2026. In Agia Marina homes are spread out and shops sit along the main roads, so a car or taxi is the practical way around after dark. The one recent shooting, in Kitsi on the evening of 30 September 2025, was aimed at a single house.

What to watch for

  • Summer wildfires on the scrubby edges: on 1 August 2024 a fire in open ground at Agia Marina came close to houses and 112 alerts told Megalo Metochi residents to leave towards Koropi-Agia Marina Avenue; on 17 August 2026, a high fire-risk day, another broke out at Argithea and residents were put on standby by 112
  • Traffic on the main avenues: a 27-year-old motorcyclist died and his passenger was hurt after a collision with a car on Athens-Sounio Avenue near Kekropos Street, around 19:20 on a Tuesday (reported 26 August 2026)
  • Burglary of detached houses: in March 2023 police broke up a four-person gang linked to seven thefts from houses in Koropi since December 2022; they were caught just after breaking into a house in Agia Marina and taking electronics
  • A targeted shooting in Kitsi: on the evening of 30 September 2025 two masked men drove up to a house, threw stones and a cement block and fired a pistol towards the owner, missing him; police arrested one suspect the next day

Staying here

Koropi suits travellers with an early flight or a car, and people working nearby: the airport is 8 km away and the Metro runs to central Athens, 16 km off. First-time visitors to Athens will see more from a central base. Agia Marina suits a summer seaside stay for drivers, with large houses and an organised beach, but keep an eye on 112 fire alerts in July and August.
