Crime and safety in Heraklion

Ηράκλειο · Municipality

Modelled estimate — how it is made
63/100

By type of crime

Heraklion scores 63 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — below-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 173,993 people (2021 census), 709 per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Heraklion is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

Heraklion is the capital and largest city of Crete, a working port on the island's north coast with about 179,000 people in the municipality (2021 census). Its best-known sights are Lions Square with the 1628 Morosini fountain, the church of Agios Titos, and the Koules fortress guarding the old harbour, joined to the centre by the pedestrian 25th August Street. The Archaeological Museum is here, and the Minoan palace of Knossos sits on the municipality's southern edge. Nikos Kazantzakis airport, Greece's second busiest, is about 5 km east, and ferries leave for Santorini and Piraeus, so many visitors come for Knossos, the museum or a connection. Ammoudara's long sandy beach starts just west of town, and on Wednesdays a laiki (street market) fills Christomichali Xylouri street.

After dark

From about 9pm the centre's evening life gathers in the cafes and bars around Lions Square and on the Korai Street bar strip, which peaks after 10:30pm; the lit harbour front below Koules is the calmer option. In summer the clubs east of the harbour run until 5-6am, and the violent incidents in recent press reports happened outside clubs and bars in the small hours. Taxis rank near Lions Square, though one guide warns they get scarce after 3am.

What to watch for

  • Ikarou Avenue: shortly after 2:30am on 23 February 2025 a gunman fired shots outside a nightclub, wounding two young men in the hip and thigh, and fled before police arrived
  • Bar doors before dawn: on 1 May 2026 three hooded young men armed with a knife, a stick and blank-firing pistols attacked the doorman of a well-known city bar who had turned one of them away, then fled by car against the traffic; police stopped the car and all three face attempted-murder charges
  • Parked cars: in May 2026 police broke up a ring of minors linked to 14 thefts and attempted thefts from parked cars and taxis across the urban area between April 2025 and May 2026
  • Crowded bars around Lions Square and Korai Street: 2026 visitor guides name petty theft as the main night-time risk and advise keeping bags in front and phones off bar tables
  • Port: a July 2026 guide advises agreeing the fare before getting into an unlicensed cab near the port
  • Policing: in April 2026 the citizen-protection minister announced 50 extra permanent officers for Nikos Kazantzakis airport and 20 for the port, plus a new organised-crime sub-directorate for Crete growing from 20 to 130 officers

Staying here

Yes, for a city break or before a ferry or flight: the airport and port are under ten minutes from town by taxi. The centre around Lions Square and its pedestrian streets is the practical base, with the harbour under ten minutes' walk; light sleepers should pick a street away from the Korai bars. Hotels facing the ferry harbour, beside the bus station, suit early boats.
