Crime and safety in Rhodes

Ρόδος · Municipality

Modelled estimate — how it is made
58/100

By type of crime

Rhodes scores 58 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 115,490 people (2021 census), 82 per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Rhodes is actually like

Fine by day, care after darkThe note names what changes after dark and where; by day the usual precautions apply.

Rhodes is one municipality for the whole island: since 2011 it has joined Rhodes town, at the island's north-east tip, with Ialysos, Kallithea, Afantou, Archangelos, Lindos, Kameiros, Attavyros, Petaloudes and South Rhodes. The town itself has about 56,000 people. Its walled Medieval City, built by the Knights Hospitaller and listed by UNESCO, holds the Palace of the Grand Master and the Street of the Knights; Mandraki harbour and its Italian-era market sit outside the walls, with Elli beach within walking distance. Faliraki, 14 km from town, is the big beach-and-nightlife resort; Ixia and Ialysos, between town and the airport, are quieter and better value; Lindos, 48 km away, draws couples and heavy daytime crowds. Laikimap lists the town's laiki on Wednesdays and Saturdays outside the municipal cemetery at Agios Dimitrios and on Thursdays on Vyronos Street.

After dark

Nightlife splits three ways: Orfanidou Street, the bar strip on the town's west coast; the bars around Hippocrates Square and Menekleous Street inside the walls; and Faliraki. The documented trouble comes late, outside bars and clubs: a beating and robbery outside a Faliraki bar around 01:00 in August 2025, and an assault in the Old Town at about 05:00 in July 2026, when hardly anyone was about. If you have been drinking, do not drive back from hill villages on their winding roads.

What to watch for

  • Faliraki, Ermou Street: at about 01:00 on 20 August 2025 six men beat two 25-year-old tourists outside a bar and took one's bag with cash, cards, phone and a hire-car key; two days earlier four men had attacked three young tourists outside a Faliraki nightclub. Police opened a robbery file against six unidentified men
  • Old Town square: at about 05:00 on 19 July 2026 three men attacked two women tourists, starting outside a night venue; one was left with facial grazes and a broken tooth, the other with a nose injury. Police were gathering witness statements and footage from the Medieval City
  • Medieval City nightclubs: two teenage holidaymakers reported being raped at a hotel on the evening of 27 April 2026 by two men they had met at an Old Town nightclub; police arrested two suspects and the case was under investigation in May 2026
  • Hired quad bikes: on the evening of 15 April 2026 a 21-year-old visitor lost control of a rented quad on a road near his hotel and hit a utility pole; he was flown to a hospital in Crete with head injuries and multiple fractures

Staying here

Yes. Rhodes town, the Old Town or the Elli area, is the easiest base for a first visit, though busy in peak season. Ialysos suits families wanting quiet near town, Kallithea suits a calm spa stay, and Faliraki suits beach-and-nightlife holidays but is noisy in parts. Lindos suits couples once the day crowds leave; nearby Lardos is for quiet travellers.
