Dafni-Ymittos scores 48 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 33,628 people (2021 census), 13,358 per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Dafni-Ymittos is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

Dafni-Ymittos is a compact, densely built municipality of 33,886 people (2021) on just 2.35 km², formed in 2011 by merging Dafni and Ymittos. Dafni, the seat and the larger half, is an inner suburb 2 km south of the Acropolis whose streets run straight on into Athens, Nea Smyrni and Agios Dimitrios; Vouliagmenis Avenue is its main road to the centre and Dafni station is on Metro Line 2. A 2025 food guide describes busy shopping streets, cafes and squares shared by students, families and long-standing residents, with restaurants on the pedestrianised Agias Varvaras. Ymittos sits at the foot of the mountain of the same name, next to Vyronas and Ilioupoli, and the PYRKAL factory grounds take up a large part of it. Laikimap lists weekly markets on Wednesdays (Eleftheriou Venizelou) and Saturdays (Othonos) in Dafni and Thursdays (Eleftheroton) in Kalykopoieio; the streets rotate.

After dark

Evenings centre on Dafni's eating and drinking streets: the Agias Varvaras pedestrian street and the bars on Megalou Alexandrou and Ipirou, where DJs play in the evenings. Trouble is occasional: in July 2025, shortly before 11pm, a fight among teenagers at a food outlet opposite Agios Ioannis metro station left a member of staff who stepped in with a stomach wound, and a 16-year-old carrying a knife was arrested.

What to watch for

  • Robberies of lone shop staff: over at least a month up to late June 2025 a man robbed kiosks, convenience shops and pharmacies staffed by one person, using a knife or force; police tied 11 robberies in Dafni, Neos Kosmos, Nea Smyrni and Agios Dimitrios to him, including three in a few days on the same worker at the kiosk on Kalogiron Square. Two men were arrested on 30 June 2025
  • Chain snatching: on the afternoon of 9 September 2026 two teenagers aged 15 and 17 pulled a gold chain from a woman's neck in Dafni and she was hurt when she fell; an off-duty police officer caught them, and they were linked to two more snatches, from a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old, on 8 and 9 September
  • A late-evening fight near Agios Ioannis metro station: on 16 July 2025, shortly before 11pm, a brawl among minors at a food outlet opposite the station left a 28-year-old employee injured by a sharp object; police detained a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old

Staying here

A reasonable base if you want an ordinary Athens neighbourhood rather than the tourist centre. Choose Dafni, close to Dafni station on Line 2 and the restaurants of Agias Varvaras, where the streets are busy. Ymittos, at the foot of the mountain beside Vyronas and Ilioupoli, suits people moving to the area more than short-stay visitors.
