Crime and safety in Corfu

Κέρκυρα · Municipality

Modelled estimate — how it is made
75/100

By type of crime

Corfu scores 75 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — below-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 68,558 people (2021 census), 263 per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Corfu is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

Created when Corfu was split into three municipalities in 2019, this one covers Corfu town and the centre of the island, plus the small islands of Othonoi, Ereikoussa and Mathraki. The town is the draw: a Venetian-era old town on the UNESCO list since 2007, with the arcaded cafés of the Liston, the broad Spianada esplanade and the Old Fortress, and the Garitsa promenade running south to the Kanoni peninsula and its view of Pontikonisi. Its port is Greece's second busiest for cruise traffic and its airport the fifth busiest. Most visitors sleep in resort hotels out of town, yet by the local MP's count nearly all of them come into town at least twice, and four in five visit Palaiokastritsa and the Achilleion. The municipality also takes in Benitses, Gastouri, Pelekas and the north-eastern resort of Ipsos.

After dark

Evenings centre on the Liston cafés, the tavernas in the Old Town lanes and the bars around the Old Port, which a 2026 guide calls lively without excess and open even out of season. Police do enforce music hours: five business owners on Evgeniou Voulgareos were arrested at 23:10 on 4 April 2025. The real night-time risks lie outside the old centre: the Ipsos strip in summer, and the motorbike ride home in the small hours.

What to watch for

  • Motorbike crashes in the small hours on the roads in and around town: a 20-year-old rider came off at the New Port at about 3.20am on 17 August 2025 and was intubated in intensive care, and on 3 July 2026 a 19-year-old visitor died after his motorbike crossed into the oncoming lane at Asyrmatos, Potamos, at around 4am and hit another
  • Ipsos in high season: a July 2025 parliamentary question from Corfu MP Dimitrios Biagkis names Ipsos, together with Kavos in the south of the island, as where the young party crowd stays and where thefts, disturbances and drug dealing follow, with police from town sent to reinforce both every day through the summer
  • Thin police cover outside town: the same question puts the island's force more than 30% below strength, with the Palaiokastritsa station at 40% of its staffing, Achilleio at 60% and the tourist police at 60% at the start of the 2025 season, and some stations unable to crew a patrol car around the clock
  • Summer roads: hire cars, coaches, motorbikes and mopeds multiply each summer on what the MP calls an old, badly maintained road network; a 2026 guide treats a car as essential outside the Old Town because the resorts are not linked to one another and buses keep unreliable timetables

Staying here

Yes. The Old Town is the easiest base: walkable without a car and still alive in January, though its lanes echo late into summer nights. Garitsa and Kanoni put the sea ten minutes away but sit under the flight path, so ask for a sea-facing room. Gastouri and Palaiokastritsa suit drivers, and much of the west coast shuts from October to April. Ipsos is for a summer party crowd.
