By type of crime

Kalamata scores 64 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — below-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 69,849 people (2021 census), 157 per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Kalamata is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

Kalamata is the administrative and commercial centre of the south-western Peloponnese, a city on the Messinian Gulf at the foot of Mount Taygetos with a long seafront and sandy beaches. The historic centre is neoclassical buildings, squares and pedestrian streets: the 13th-century castle and the Ypapanti Cathedral square to the south, and the busy Paplomatadika quarter around 23rd Martiou Square. Aristomenous Street, the main axis past the central square and town hall, runs from the old town down to the Railway Park and the seafront. Navarinou Street carries the hotels and restaurants of the 2.5 km eastern beach; Kordia beach lies west of the port. People come for the beach, the International Dance Festival held since 1995 and as a base for sites and resorts across Messinia. The laiki runs on Wednesday and Saturday mornings in the north car park of the Municipal Market.

After dark

Summer nights move to the seafront: bars, ouzeries and tavernas along Navarinou Street and the eastern beach, while the cafés and grills of Paplomatadika keep the old centre busy. Police do check the seafront bars: in July 2026 they fined a café-bar on Navarinou EUR 1,000 and arrested its owner after a 14-year-old who had been drinking there collapsed on the seafront around midnight and was taken to hospital.

What to watch for

  • Rented rooms on the seafront: in September 2025 a man broke the window of a room let to a tourist couple on Navarinou Street early in the morning and took three suitcases and a bag of jewellery; police stopped his car at a checkpoint the same day and returned everything
  • Bags left on the sand: on a Saturday afternoon in July 2025 a bag with cash, a phone and two iPads was taken from a 77-year-old visitor while he swam off the town beach; another bather alerted police, who arrested three young men on Iroon Polytechniou Street
  • Swimming outside lifeguard hours: from 1 September the town-beach lifeguards start at 10:00 instead of 8:00, and on one day in early September 2026 bathers had to pull two women from the water, one off Anastasi and one near the Filoxenia hotel; both went to hospital
  • Property crime outweighs violence: Messinia police recorded 784 thefts and burglaries in 2024 (up 9% on 2023) and 141 vehicle thefts, against two robberies, both solved. A rare exception came in late September 2026, when a hooded intruder forced a third-floor flat in Kipoupoli on a weekday morning, took a wallet with about EUR 2,000 and left a 73-year-old woman with minor hand injuries
  • Roads: Messinia traffic police logged 12,517 offences in 2024, 30% more than in 2023, including 2,115 for speeding and 501 for drink-driving; recorded accidents fell from 70 to 64

Staying here

Yes, Kalamata works as a base. Navarinou Street has the luxury hotels and restaurants with the beach across the road, the pick for a summer stay; keep valuables out of sight in the room, since a seafront let was broken into in 2025. The historic centre, around Aristomenous Street and 23rd Martiou Square, puts squares, pedestrian streets and Paplomatadika's cafés on the doorstep and suits a city break.
