Amorgos scores 86 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for violent crime — very low crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 1,973 people (2021 census), 15 per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Amorgos is actually like
Amorgos is the easternmost island of the Cyclades, a mountainous island rising to 823 m, with 1,961 residents in the municipality at the 2021 census. Chora, the capital, keeps cars outside its pedestrian centre, and the Panagia Hozoviotissa monastery sits on the cliffside north-east of it. Katapola is the main port and the practical base for the centre and south; Aegiali, with the island's longest sandy beach and some ferry calls of its own, has the villages of Tholaria and Lagada on the slopes above it. Arkesini and Kalotaritissa, down the southern road, are remote and quiet. Visitors come for walking, swimming and diving, a draw since Luc Besson's The Big Blue (1988) showed off its waters. There is no airport: everything arrives by sea, with ferries from Piraeus to Katapola and links to Naxos, Paros, Mykonos, Koufonisia and Santorini.
After dark
Evenings are low-key. Chora, with bars along its car-free lanes, has the most going on; Aegiali has some evening life around the beach, and Arkesini and Kalotaritissa are almost silent. The practical problem after dark is getting around: on the autumn bus timetable that ran to 11 October 2026, the last departures between Katapola, Chora and Aegiali left between 16:15 and 18:30, so a night out away from your base needs your own transport.
What to watch for
- Ferry cancellations in strong wind: on 2 October 2026, with gusts up to 9 Beaufort and a sailing ban in force, Seajets cancelled Piraeus-Katapola, Santorini-Koufonisia-Amorgos and Amorgos-Naxos-Paros-Mykonos sailings. The island is reachable only by boat, so leave slack before an onward flight
- Thin medical cover: in July 2026 the hospital doctors' federation (OENGE) said the island's health centre had one family doctor, one paediatrician and four newly qualified rural-service doctors, very few nurses, and its X-ray unit and laboratory out of action during renovation
- Slow evacuations: in January 2026 the municipal council unanimously complained of air-ambulance transfers delayed by many hours and asked for EKAB helicopters able to fly at night and in bad weather; patients are also moved by a privately contracted boat that the doctors' federation calls unsuitable
- Walking in the heat: in June 2024 a hiker who set out from Aegiali on the roughly four-hour path to Katapola went missing during days of extreme heat, prompting a search by police, firefighters, volunteers, the Amorgos rescue team and a drone. Start early, carry water and tell someone your route
- Earthquakes: between 26 January and 14 February 2025 more than 19,200 quakes were recorded off the islands, most near the uninhabited islet of Anydros, including a magnitude 5.1 off Amorgos. Schools closed and Amorgos was put under a state of emergency until 11 March 2025; no casualties or significant damage were reported
Staying here
Yes, as a calm base. Aegiali suits first-timers and beach holidays, with the longest sandy beach and the most evening life; Katapola is the practical choice for ferries and the south; Chora is the most atmospheric but steep and without a beach. Tholaria and Lagada suit walkers, while Arkesini and Kalotaritissa suit people after seclusion who have a car.
