Makrygianni is the small wedge directly south of the Acropolis, between the Acropolis Museum, Dionysiou Areopagitou and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. It has become the city's polished hotel quarter - rooftop bars with Parthenon views, boutique hotels, good restaurants - while keeping enough residential streets to feel like a neighbourhood. The Acropolis metro station is its northern edge and Koukaki begins where the visitor-facing streets peter out.

After dark

Well lit, well used and quiet in the right way: people walking back from dinner rather than drinking on the street. Dionysiou Areopagitou on its northern boundary stays busy into the small hours.

What to watch for

  • Pickpocketing along Dionysiou Areopagitou and in the Acropolis Museum and site queues - inside the police 'first sector'
  • The Acropolis police district, which covers this area, recorded the highest count of thefts and burglaries in Attica in 2025 at 1,880
  • The July 2026 knife attack on two tourists happened at the south site entrance, opposite the Acropolis Museum, on this neighbourhood's edge
  • Hotel-booking fraud is reported for listings advertised as Makrygianni, Plaka, Koukaki and Kolonaki - book through established channels

Staying here

One of the best all-round bases in Athens, especially for couples, older travellers and museum-focused trips. You pay for the location. Budget travellers and anyone wanting local-feeling streets should walk two blocks further into Koukaki.

Reputation against reality. Makrygianni and Koukaki are sold interchangeably and are not the same: Makrygianni is the visitor-facing strip around the museum, Koukaki the residential neighbourhood behind it. Travellers who booked 'Koukaki' expecting local tavernas and landed on the museum side of the line are usually describing Makrygianni.
