Vlatero scores 56 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for property crime — average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Vlatero has no police figures of its own. Its estimate is Patras's rate — Patras scores 55 for property crime — and the 1 point between them comes from how the model shares Patras's total out, not from anything measured in Vlatero. An estimated 1,330 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Vlatero is actually like
One of the oldest quarters of Patras, on the threshold between the upper and lower city, its name from the Latin blattea, the purple dye used for precious fabrics — Byzantine workshops connected with the celebrated Danielis worked here. Today it is a small, steep, densely built residential pocket of old houses and modest blocks on the slope, with long-settled families and very little commerce, and it is one of the routes walkers take between the centre and Ano Poli. Against Tabahana, its counterpart on the same threshold, it is older and steeper; against the squares below it is markedly quieter and less maintained.
After dark
Quiet and empty. Narrow, steep, stepped streets with thin lighting and no late footfall, and the same pattern of neglected plots and vacant buildings that affects the upper city generally. The caution is about isolation and footing on the climb rather than any documented incident — nothing in the 2024-2026 record names Vlatero.
What to watch for
- Steep stepped lanes with thin lighting on the climb between the lower and upper city
- Derelict buildings and overgrown plots on the slope
- Poor footing on old paving at night
Staying here
Little formal accommodation, but the odd short let exists and you are within walking distance of both the centre and Ano Poli. Not a base for an early Italy ferry — the South Port gates are 4-5 km away and you are uphill.
