Property crime in Aspropyrgos

Ασπρόπυργος · Municipality

Modelled estimate — how it is made
28/100

By type of crime

Aspropyrgos scores 28 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for property crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 30,251 people (2021 census), 289 per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Aspropyrgos is actually like

Fine by day, care after darkThe note names what changes after dark and where; by day the usual precautions apply.

Aspropyrgos is a working town of about 31,000 people on the Thriasio plain, roughly 15 km north-west of central Athens and a few kilometres east of Elefsina. Its residential centre runs along Dimokratias Avenue, the main street; to the south-east spreads an industrial belt of warehouses, logistics yards, metal recyclers and wholesalers, and the Hellenic Petroleum refinery, among the largest in Greece, sits by the sea to the south. The refineries are the main employer. The name comes from a white tower on the Iera Odos, the ancient Sacred Way. The coastal strip, Paralia Aspropyrgou, has fish tavernas and cafés, but swimming is banned. Proastiakos trains between the airport and Kiato stop at the town's station, and the A6 Attiki Odos and A65 motorways pass through. Laikimap lists weekly farmers' markets on Ethnikis Antistaseos (Mondays) and Genoktonias (Saturdays), plus a rotating Wednesday one.

After dark

The night-time crime in recent reports falls on the industrial and motorway edges rather than in the town centre. A lorry driver resting at the Attiki Odos service area was robbed before dawn in October 2025, the thieves escaping on foot through dark fields, and drivers who stay overnight there say it was not the first time. A storeroom break-in in March 2026 happened around midnight. Do not walk between industrial sites or along the motorway roads after dark.

What to watch for

  • Lorry robberies at the Aspropyrgos service area (SEA) on the Attiki Odos parallel road: shortly after 04:15 on 27 October 2025 thieves forced open a parked lorry, pushed its resting driver to the ground and took 30-40 boxes of children's clothing; drivers say similar attacks have happened there before
  • Break-ins and robberies by an organised group: police arrested two men in March 2026 from a group said to have been stealing and robbing around Aspropyrgos since at least November 2024; its latest job was a break-in at a shop's storeroom around midnight on 12 March 2026, when tools were taken
  • Gunfire after a road quarrel: on the afternoon of 4 August 2025 a dispute over a traffic matter left a lorry driver and three companions injured, and dozens of shots were then fired at the front of their business, also damaging a nearby house; two men were charged with attempted homicide and police found a pistol and a stolen rifle
  • Industrial fires: on the morning of 9 July 2026 a scrap-metal and recycling yard at the junction of Megaridos and Chiou streets burned with dense black smoke, and a 112 alert told people near Megaridos Street to leave towards Aspropyrgos via Agiou Georgiou Street
  • Summer wildfires: on 31 July 2026 a forest fire on Poikilo Oros, near the Aigaleo ring road (Perifereiaki Aigaleo), brought out 95 firefighters, 22 vehicles and five helicopters, with a 112 alert telling residents to stand ready

Staying here

Book here only if work takes you to the refineries, warehouses or logistics yards, and then aim for the residential centre around Dimokratias Avenue rather than anything on the industrial belt or near the motorway service area, where the night-time robberies were reported. As a holiday base it makes little sense: central Athens is about 15 km away and has far more to offer a visitor.
