Property crime in Peristeri

Περιστέρι · Municipality

Modelled estimate — how it is made
39/100

By type of crime

Peristeri scores 39 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for property crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 139,981 people (2021 census), 13,285 per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Peristeri is actually like

Fine by day, care after darkThe note names what changes after dark and where; by day the usual precautions apply.

Peristeri is a built-up municipality about 4 km north-west of central Athens, between Mount Aigaleo and the Kifissos river, its streets running straight on into Aigaleo, Chaidari, Petroupoli and Ilion. With 133,630 residents at the 2021 census it is Greece's seventh-largest municipality. Three Line 2 metro stations serve it, Agios Antonios, Peristeri and Anthoupoli, and the Kifissos long-distance bus terminal stands on its eastern edge. Town life runs between Town Hall Square, Peristeri station and Bournazi, whose central square and café-lined Veaki Street are the evening draw, while the large, well-kept Alsos Peristeriou park is used by all ages. Atromitos football and Peristeri basketball, at Peristeri Arena, are based here. Eleven weekly laiki markets rotate through the districts, among them Monday on Ptolemaidos in Lofos Axiomatikon and Saturday at Ithakis and Rodou in Bournazi.

After dark

Evenings centre on Bournazi, where the cafés and bars of Veaki Street keep the area populated. The worst recent violence came at nightclub closing time there: a fatal stabbing outside a club at about 3:30am in October 2025, and a bomb at the same club's entrance on Bournazi square at a similar hour in early November. Away from the centre, the junction of Anthon and Vasilikon is poorly lit and residents report fast evening traffic, and vehicle thieves work at night.

What to watch for

  • Bournazi nightclubs at closing time: a man was fatally stabbed outside a club shortly after 3:30am on 19 October 2025 (the suspect, who worked as security at local venues, surrendered two days later), and in early November 2025 a bomb wrecked the entrance of the same club on Bournazi square at about 3:30am
  • Armed groups of teenagers: on a Sunday afternoon in June 2026 about 40 minors carrying knives, clubs and a knuckle-duster threatened other youths on Makrygianni Square and hit a young woman who asked them to leave; police arrested seven aged 14-17, while about 15 ran off towards Nemeas Street
  • Pedestrians after dark: a man crossing at the junction of Anthon and Vasilikon streets was hit and killed by a car shortly before 11pm on 18 May 2026; the spot lacks adequate lighting and residents say cars speed there in the evening
  • Night-time vehicle theft: a ring that stole high-value cars and motorbikes, scouting targets at night, was broken up in raids in Peristeri, Kamatero and Acharnes on 29 September 2026, with eight arrests and 23 thefts across Attica, Peristeri among them, solved

Staying here

Peristeri suits people with family, work or a match in west Athens more than first-time sightseers. If you book here, the streets around the three Line 2 stations, Agios Antonios, Peristeri and Anthoupoli, keep the metro a short walk away. Around Bournazi square you are next to the town's nightlife; take a taxi rather than walking home at club closing time.

Reputation against reality. Elsewhere in Athens, Peristeri's image comes from a pop hit and a TV series: a brash 'other planet' of clubs and youths on motorbikes in Bournazi. Athens Voice treats that as a caricature of a town with an all-day café scene on Veaki and a big, well-kept park. The 2025-2026 news record fits neither picture: ordinary suburban problems such as night-time vehicle theft and a dangerous junction, plus two serious incidents at one Bournazi nightclub and an armed group of teenagers on Makrygianni Square.
