  VathiΒάθης · high crimeVathi is a small square and the blocks around it north-west of Omonia, where Marni meets Acharnon and Liosion. A respectable bourgeois district in the 19th century, it is now a poor, heavily migrant residential pocket with cheap hotels, wholesale shops and nothing for a visitor. The Hellenic Police list it by name in the 'second sector' of their central Athens drug and petty-crime operation.

  Pedion tou AreosΠεδίον Άρεως · above-average crimeAthens' second-largest park, about 277 stremmata of pine and plane between Kypseli, Exarchia and Patision, laid out on former military ground as a memorial to the heroes of 1821 and lined with their statues. It is run by the Region of Attica, not the city. On a weekday it is full of runners, dog walkers, prams and the Panellinios sports club, and it is by a long way the best reason to be in this part of Athens.

  Watch for: Drug dealing has a long history here: a market of several hundred users a day near the Mavrommateon entrance was cleared after the park was folded into the central Athens policing plan in 2019, and crime reporting still lists the park among the district's spots

  AsteroskopeioΑστεροσκοπείο · above-average crimeAsteroskopeio is the slope around the National Observatory on the Hill of the Nymphs, above Thiseio and beside Ano Petralona, in the belt of western hills that also holds the Pnyx and Filopappou. It is a handful of quiet streets, archaeological ground and pine, with Theophil Hansen's 1842-46 observatory building at the top and one of the best free views in the city.

  Watch for: The unlit archaeological footpaths over the Hill of the Nymphs, the Pnyx and Filopappou after sunset — Greek reporting lists this belt of hills among the places treated as no-go at night

  AsyrmatosΑσύρματος · above-average crimeAsyrmatos — also called Attaliotika or ta Petrina — is a small settlement of roughly 170 stone houses on the western slope of Filopappou above Ano Petralona, built in 1955-57 for refugees from Attaleia using stone salvaged from the burnt naval wireless school. It is one of the prettiest corners of Athens and the setting of the censored 1961 film Synoikia to Oneiro.

  Watch for: The Filopappou and Pnyx footpaths connecting the settlement to Thiseio and Koukaki — the most consistently documented mugging location in central Athens, including a fatal attack about 100 yards below the Philopappou Monument and a knife robbery of a couple

  Neos KosmosΝέος Κόσμος · above-average crimeNeos Kosmos is a working, mixed district below Mets and across Syngrou from Koukaki, built on 1920s Armenian and Asia Minor refugee settlement and decades of state housing. It has genuinely improved: the Onassis Stegi, the EMST contemporary art museum and the Neos Kosmos Theatre are all here, alongside car repair shops, cheap food and a metro and tram interchange.

  Watch for: The pedestrian underpasses under Leoforos Syngrou near Panteion University — site of a documented June 2026 incident in which a man followed a woman through them while indecently exposed, arrested afterwards on Lagoumitzi Street

  PatisiaΠατήσια · above-average crimeLess a neighbourhood than a 4.5-kilometre axis — Patision, officially 28is Oktovriou — running from the Polytechnic north through Victoria, Amerikis and Koliatsou to Ano Patisia. It carries the National Archaeological Museum, ASOEE, old cinemas and department stores, and hundreds of thousands of residents in the blocks either side. Its character changes every few hundred metres: the southern kilometre behaves like Omonia, the northern half like an ordinary outer district.

  Watch for: Pickpocketing and chain-snatching along the Patision corridor and at its stations — Patisia and Acropolis together logged 23 cases and 21 arrests in 2026

  Profitis DaniilΠροφήτης Δανιήλ · above-average crimeProfitis Daniil sits at the western edge of the Municipality of Athens, bordering Votanikos, Akadimia Platonos, Kolonos, Sepolia, the Rouf area and the municipality of Aigaleo, and takes its name from the church on Leoforos Athinon. It is a low-rise mix of workshops, warehouses, small industry and modest housing on the city's industrial belt.

  Watch for: Industrial frontage on and around Leoforos Athinon: long blank stretches, poor lighting and almost no passing footfall once the workshops close

  RoufΡουφ · above-average crimeRouf is the half-industrial wedge south-west of Omonia along Pireos and Petrou Ralli, named after a Bavarian businessman who bought the land under King Otto. Warehouses, car workshops, an army camp with recruitment offices, a suburban rail station and a small park make up most of it; the draws are the Rouf theatre housed in a converted railway carriage, which has run since 1997, and the spillover of Gazi's nightlife along Pireos. Very few visitors ever have reason to walk here.

  Watch for: Emptiness rather than documented crime: long unlit industrial blocks along Pireos and Petrou Ralli with no footfall at night

  DourgoutiΔουργούτι · above-average crimeDourgouti is the old refugee quarter inside Neos Kosmos, near the tram tracks, where Armenian and then Asia Minor refugees were housed from 1922 and where the state replaced the shacks with public housing blocks between the late 1930s and 1971. It remains one of the most mixed places in central Athens: second- to fourth-generation refugee families alongside Armenians from Syria, Iran and Lebanon and newer Albanian, Syrian and Bangladeshi households.

  Watch for: Unlit internal courtyards and stairwells in the ageing public housing blocks around Sfingos and Rene Pyo

  Agios NikolaosΆγιος Νικόλαος · above-average crimeA dense district built around the church and square of Agios Nikolaos, with Acharnon as its commercial spine and its own ISAP station on Line 1. It was middle-class, then older residents left and migrant households moved in, drawn by cheap older flats and the transport. It functions as a working local high street: bakeries, phone shops, ethnic groceries, the Saturday market. Very few outsiders come here on purpose.

  Watch for: Plateia Agiou Nikolaou, named in the Hellenic Police 2026 plan as a drug-dealing spot alongside Victoria, Attiki and Amerikis

  Akadimia PlatonosΑκαδημία Πλάτωνος · above-average crimeThe neighbourhood wrapped around the excavated site of Plato's Academy, between Lenorman and Athinon Avenue. It is a mixed industrial-residential patchwork — workshops, car dealerships, warehouses and apartment blocks — that grew after the war with no regard for what was underneath it. The archaeological grove is the only real green space for the surrounding districts, and a long-running programme to turn it into a proper archaeological park with a new Museum of the City of Athens is the area's one big hope.

  Watch for: The archaeological grove after dusk — reporting on the site described neglect, dealers operating openly and visitors approached

  VotanikosΒοτανικός · above-average crimeAn unplanned, half-industrial pocket on both sides of Iera Odos in the western municipality, roughly 5,000-6,000 residents in about half a square kilometre. Part of it is a genuine village of low houses with gardens and streets named after things like joy and spring; the rest is warehouses, workshops and yards. The Agricultural University sits here, the Panathinaikos stadium is going up as part of the Double Redevelopment, and the wider Elaionas around it is one of the poorest tracts in the city.

  Watch for: The industrial blocks around Orfeos, Konstantinoupoleos and Iera Odos, deserted at night

  ExarcheiaΕξάρχεια · high crimeExarcheia is the university and counterculture quarter north-east of Omonia, between the Polytechneio, the National Archaeological Museum and the Lycabettus slopes. Publishing houses, bookshops, rembetiko tavernas, the Saturday market on Kallidromiou and the self-managed Navarinou park sit alongside squats, anarchist graffiti and a heavy standing police presence. Exarcheia Square itself has been fenced off for years as a Metro Line 4 worksite, and the fight over it is the neighbourhood's defining public argument.

  Watch for: Drug dealing: a May 2026 police raid on a flat in the wider Exarcheia area arrested five people and seized cannabis, heroin and ecstasy, with lookouts posted across the neighbourhood and drugs hidden in planters

  Agios PanteleimonasΆγιος Παντελεήμονας · high crimeA dense 1960s apartment district around the big church on Acharnon, minutes from Victoria and Attiki metro. Middle-class once, emptied from the 1980s, and since the 1990s one of the most migrant neighbourhoods in Athens; the church runs a daily soup kitchen and the square has working cafes and a playground. It also names the police division covering Victoria, Attiki, Agios Nikolaos and Amerikis, so it absorbs their statistics as well as its own.

  Watch for: Chain-snatching from the neck — the Agios Panteleimonas police division logged 36 cases and 10 arrests in 2026, second only to Omonia

  AttikiΑττική · high crimeA working transport knot rather than a destination: Attiki is where Metro Line 2 meets Line 1, on Liosion, with the trolleybus depot taking up a whole block. The square is the only open public space for streets around and does a Saturday street market; Remoundi and the streets off it still hold a run of neoclassical facades under decades of neglect. Residents are a mix of long-standing Greek households and migrant families who arrived from the 1990s.

  Watch for: Pickpocketing and bag-snatching on the Attiki interchange platforms and stairs — Attiki was one of the stations worked by a chain-snatching gang broken up with 21 arrests over 129 cases

  Kato PatisiaΚάτω Πατήσια · high crimeA dense working- to middle-class district that grew along Patision and Acharnon and was built out hard in the 1950s to 80s. It was hit unusually badly by the crisis: shop closures along Acharnon, property values down sharply, an eleven per cent population fall between the two censuses. It has a large migrant population, an active Saturday street market, and one of the city's older squatted plots at Patmou and Karavia run as a cultural park.

  Watch for: Chain-snatching at Kato Patisia ISAP station — one of the stations worked by the gang broken up with 21 arrests over 129 cases

  Koliatsou SquareΚολιάτσου · high crimeTwo squares on Patision, a kilometre apart, that were the social centre of north Athens in the 1950s and 60s — cafes, the Studio and Radio City cinemas, theatres, writers and students. Amerikis was named in 1927 for American philhellenism; Koliatsou was officially renamed Australias and nobody uses it. Both are now ordinary, tired, heavily multicultural squares surrounded by dense blocks, and they are among the very few pieces of open ground in the district.

  Watch for: Both squares are named in the Hellenic Police 2026 plan as drug-trafficking focuses in the Agios Panteleimonas sector

  KolonosΚολωνός · high crimeA dense working-class district northwest of the centre, named for the ancient Hippios Kolonos of Sophocles and rebuilt wholesale as apartment blocks in the 1960s and 70s. It has real civic life — neighbourhood assemblies, four amateur football clubs, the open-air Epi Kolono theatre, the restored Public Tobacco Factory used for exhibitions — alongside closed shopfronts and a tired building stock. Poverty and drug problems concentrate toward the lower Lenorman end.

  Watch for: Lofos Kolonou (Kolonos Hill) after dark — an encampment in and around the abandoned Kapralos cafe, with residents reporting robberies and knife threats nearby

  Larissa StationΣταθμός Λαρίσης · high crimeThe strip either side of Athens' main railway station, opened in 1904 at the end of Ioulianou on Domokou, with its own metro stop on Line 2. It is a functional arrival-and-departure zone hemmed in by tracks: budget hotels, kiosks, car hire, the Peloponnese station shed opposite, and behind it a stock of abandoned neoclassical and industrial buildings occupied by homeless people, migrants and drug users. Almost nobody chooses to be here except to catch a train.

  Watch for: Bag theft and distraction theft on the station concourse and platforms, and on the Line 2 platforms at Larisis

  MetaxourgeioΜεταξουργείο · high crimeMetaxourgeio, named for a 19th-century silk mill, is the most uneven neighbourhood in central Athens. Avdi Square is its heart - trees, cafes, theatres, an art gallery - and the blocks around it hold galleries, wine bars and some of the city's better restaurants. Three streets away the same district still has brothel rows and an entrenched street drug market.

  OmoniaΟμόνοια · high crimeOmonia is central Athens's transport and commercial hinge: a two-line metro interchange where Panepistimiou, Stadiou, Athinas, Piraeus and Agiou Konstantinou meet. The square was rebuilt with a fountain and new lighting under the city's 'Omonia as it was' plan, and branded hotels have moved back onto it. What people mean by 'Omonia', though, is usually the grid of narrow streets behind it.

  Watch for: Chain-snatching: Omonia recorded the most chain-snatching cases of any central Athens area in 2026 - 37 incidents, 17 arrests (Hellenic Police figures, Sept 2026)

  AkadimiaΑκαδημία · above-average crimeAkadimia is the office-and-institution belt between Omonia, Kanigos Square, Exarcheia, Neapoli and Kolonaki, crossed by the three parallel arteries Stadiou, Panepistimiou and Akadimias. This is the busiest commercial stretch of Athens - banks, ministries, law offices, theatres and department stores - plus the 'Athenian Trilogy' of the Academy, the old University building and the former National Library. Visitors come for the neoclassical facades and pass through on the way between Syntagma and Omonia.

  Watch for: The Propylaia (the University forecourt on Panepistimiou), Klafthmonos Square, Santaroza and the EKPA buildings are named in the Hellenic Police 2026 plan as drug-dealing points targeted by the operation

  Agios ArtemiosΆγιος Αρτέμιος · above-average crimeAgios Artemios — older name Gouva — is the dense, unglamorous stretch around the church on Filolaou, sitting between Mets, Pangrati, Vyronas, Ymittos, Dafni and Neos Kosmos. It is grey post-war apartment blocks with genuine neighbourhood texture: barbers, bakeries, souvlaki shops, an old-fashioned patisserie. Residents often just say they live in Pangrati because it is simpler than explaining.

  Watch for: Long, dim residential blocks off Filolaou with little foot traffic once the shops shut

  Agios ElevtheriosΆγιος Ελευθέριος · above-average crimeA northern district on Leoforos Ionias, settled in 1902 by farming families and once a summer retreat for well-off Athenians. The ISAP station opened in 1961 and turned it into an ordinary urban suburb, but it kept a mix of single-family houses among 1970s and 80s blocks. The landmark is the rebuilt church of Agios Elevtherios; it is otherwise a self-contained residential area with its own shops and schools and a significant migrant population.

  Watch for: Chain-snatching at Agios Eleftherios ISAP station, which was on the list of stations worked by the gang broken up with 21 arrests

  AmpelokipoiΑμπελόκηποι · above-average crimeAmpelokipoi is the densest district in the Municipality of Athens and its least touristy big neighbourhood: offices, embassies, hospitals, the Panathinaikos ground on Alexandras Avenue and the national police headquarters (GADA) all sit inside it. Visitors come for the Megaro Moussikis concert hall, the cinemas, Eleftherias Park and the big Saturday street market rather than for sightseeing.

  Watch for: Pickpocketing on Metro Line 3 (Ampelokipoi, Panormou, Megaro Moussikis stations) — the Hellenic Police run a dedicated plain-clothes anti-pickpocket detail on the network

  Ano KypseliΆνω Κυψέλη · above-average crimeThe uphill extension of Kypseli, built out during the fastest phase of Athenian urbanisation and reckoned among the most densely built and populated parts of the whole city. Its one distinguishing feature is the Tourkovounia rock formations on its eastern edge, an unusually raw piece of landscape for an inner-city district. It is almost purely residential — apartment blocks, corner shops, schools, church squares — with mixed Greek and migrant households and almost no free public space.

  Watch for: The unlit and unmanaged Tourkovounia slopes on the eastern edge

  Erythros StavrosΕρυθρός Σταυρός · above-average crimeErythros Stavros is a small institutional pocket of Ampelokipoi named after the Red Cross hospital, wedged between Ampelokipoi proper, Girokomeio and Ellinoroson. The Police Academy and Ministry of Justice buildings are here too. It is clinics, offices and apartment blocks with no square or centre of its own, and no tourist reason to visit.

  Watch for: Deserted office and clinic frontages after working hours, with no shops or bars to keep people on the street

  GoudiΓουδή · above-average crimeGoudi is a former army camp turned hospital-and-university quarter on the eastern edge of the municipality. It holds Laiko hospital, the Agia Sophia and Aglaia Kyriakou children's hospitals, Sotiria, the 401 military hospital, the University of Athens medical, dental and nursing schools, and a large, still half-finished metropolitan park. The population is students, medical staff and long-settled families.

  Watch for: The Goudi metropolitan park after dark — poorly lit, largely empty, and still functioning in large part as an unsupervised car park despite its protected status

  KolokynthouΚολοκυνθού · above-average crimeA small western neighbourhood between Kolonos, Akadimia Platonos and the boundary with Aigaleo and Peristeri. It was market gardens until a few decades ago, so it was subdivided later and built lower and less densely than Kolonos — more two- and three-storey houses, more yards, fewer eight-floor blocks. It is entirely residential, with a share of workshops and nuisance uses strung along the Lenorman axis.

  Watch for: The Lenorman axis, where nuisance uses and workshops concentrate and where guides place the drug-related reputation of the lower Kolonos area

  KountouriotikaΚουντουριώτικα · above-average crimeKountouriotika is the western flank of Ampelokipoi, running from the American Embassy on Vasilissis Sofias up towards Gyzi, Neapoli and the foot of Lycabettus. It was laid out as a refugee settlement after the Asia Minor campaign, on land released by President Pavlos Kountouriotis, and is now ordinary dense apartment housing with embassy and office frontage on its southern edge.

  Watch for: Standing security and restricted movement around the US Embassy on Vasilissis Sofias; protests and marches regularly close this stretch

  Nea KypseliΝέα Κυψέλη · above-average crimeA sub-district on the northern side of the Kypseli mass, towards Galatsi and the Tourkovounia. It is later and slightly looser in grain than Kypseli proper, the product of the same post-war building boom pushing uphill, and it functions as pure housing: blocks, schools, a few parish squares and neighbourhood shops. Almost nothing in the Greek press or in travel writing treats it as a place in its own right.

  Watch for: Empty residential streets with little overlooking after midnight

  Profitis IliasΠροφήτη Ηλία · above-average crimeProfitis Ilias is the upper, eastern part of Pangrati, bounded by Leoforos Ymittou and the streets Formionos, Aritis, Nikiforidi, Iliados and Empedokleous — about 334 stremmata with roughly 12,500 residents. It grew out of the 1922 refugee settlement of Pangrati, later called the Vyronas settlement, and centres on its church, built 1928-30 and consecrated in 1942, and the square in front of it.

  Watch for: Quiet residential streets off Leoforos Ymittou with limited lighting and little foot traffic late

  ThymarakiaΘυμαράκια · above-average crimeA tight residential wedge between Agios Nikolaos, Sepolia, Kolonos and Kato Patisia, built up first by self-construction on former farmland and then conventionally, with Liosion as its spine. It is unusually cut off for a central district — the railway isolates it from its neighbours — and it has almost no free public space beyond Plateia Athanasiou Diakou. Traffic from the Liosion coach terminal loads its narrow streets.

  Watch for: Liosion avenue traffic and its poorly maintained pavements

  SyntagmaΣύνταγμα · above-average crimeSyntagma is the political and transport centre of Athens: Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on one side, the National Garden behind, and Ermou running west to Monastiraki as the main shopping street. Every metro line reaches it, including the direct airport link. It is where the changing of the guard happens, where the big hotels are, and where every major Greek demonstration ends.

  Watch for: Pickpocketing at Syntagma metro station, named with Monastiraki and Omonia as the top three, and specifically on the Line 3 airport service

  RizoupoliΡιζουπόλεως · above-average crimeA northern neighbourhood on the boundary with Nea Ionia and Perissos, named after Ioannis Rizopoulos, who in the early twentieth century laid out houses, shops and roads on what was still semi-agricultural land. It grew as a refugee and working quarter and is now plain residential Athens: apartment blocks with some older houses among them, local shops, schools and the Apollon Smyrnis ground on its edge. Nothing about it appears in crime reporting or in travel-safety writing.

  Watch for: Unlit edges toward the Second Athens Cemetery and the rail corridor

  PetralonaΠετράλωνα · above-average crimeThe strip between Ano and Kato Petralona, on the slope below Filopappou. Same neighbourhood in everything but name: 1930s refugee housing, tavernas around the station, and one of the few parts of central Athens that still feels lived-in rather than let out.

  Watch for: The unlit Filopappou and Pnyx footpaths above the neighbourhood, named as a target sector in the 2026 Hellenic Police patrol plan

  Lower PetralonaΚάτω Πετράλωνα · above-average crimeKato (Lower) Petralona is the half below the Line 1 railway, running down towards Pireos street. It is more ordinary than its upper twin - 1960s apartment blocks, a central square with a church and playgrounds, local shops rather than destination tavernas - with a small bar scene of its own on Keiriadon and a pedestrian stretch of Thessalonikis under the railway that serves residents rather than visitors. Petralona station sits on the dividing line.

  Watch for: No neighbourhood-specific crime reporting found in Greek press for Kato Petralona

  PsyrriΨυρρή · above-average crimePsyrri is the dense triangle of workshops, tavernas and bars between Athinas, Ermou and Pireos, a short walk from Monastiraki. By day it is still partly a working district of leather traders and wholesale shops; by evening it is the busiest eating and drinking quarter in the historic centre, focused on Iroon Square, with Agion Anargyron and Karaiskaki the main evening streets.

  Watch for: Psyrri is inside the Hellenic Police 'first sector' - the tourist zone worked by pickpockets and chain-snatchers, where 520 people were arrested for pickpocketing in 2025 and 434 in the first eight months of 2026

  GyziΓκύζη · above-average crimeGyzi is a tightly built 1960s-70s residential pocket between Pedion tou Areos, Polygono and Leoforos Alexandras, first settled by islanders from Tinos, Naxos and Andros and named after the painter Nikolaos Gyzis. It has almost no tourists, few bars and little green space, and is one of the last central districts where housing is still described as not yet unaffordable.

  Watch for: The dark, unlit western edge of the neighbourhood where it meets Pedion tou Areos — the park closes at 23:00 and its own residents' association describes it as unsafe at night because of broken lighting

  PromponaΠρομπονά · above-average crimeA small northern pocket next to Rizoupoli, originally a refugee quarter, defined by three things: the Apollon Smyrnis ground, the Second Athens Cemetery, and the municipal nursery, a large green holding that residents have campaigned for years to open as a public park. The abandoned Columbia records factory — where most of the Greek recording catalogue of the twentieth century was pressed — stands here, with a long-running demand to make it an industrial monument and music museum.

  Watch for: Long blank frontages along the cemetery and the closed municipal nursery with no passers-by after dark

  Ano PatisiaΆνω Πατήσια · above-average crimeThe northern end of the Patision axis, where the city thins towards Nea Ionia and Galatsi. It began as an out-of-town settlement reached by tram and steam railway, industrialised early with the Drakopoulou wool mill and the Fix ice-cream works, and kept villas and estates that are now listed and mostly decaying. Next to it is Kypriadou, a 1920s-30s garden suburb of two-storey villas once lived in by writers and architects, still one of the pleasantest pockets in north Athens.

  Watch for: The Patision axis itself, which carries the district's share of street crime as you go south

  GaziΓκάζι · above-average crimeGazi is the old gasworks district west of Kerameikos, rebuilt around Technopolis - the 19th-century gas plant now a municipal culture venue. Since the early 2000s the warehouses around it have become the largest concentration of clubs and bars in central Athens, and the centre of the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife. By day it is quiet and visibly unfinished, car workshops and empty sheds among the venues.

  Watch for: Crowd-and-drink risks rather than street crime: guides advise the usual care with drinks in a district where clubs fill after 2am

  KerameikosΚεραμεικός · above-average crimeKerameikos is the strip between Psyrri and Gazi, named for the ancient potters' quarter and the cemetery excavation at the foot of Ermou. It runs from Pireos west to Konstantinoupoleos, with the Line 3 station dropping you straight into the Gazi square. It functions as Gazi's quieter half: bars, small restaurants, boutique hotels, the ancient site and ordinary residential blocks between.

  KypseliΚυψέλη · above-average crimeOne of the densest neighbourhoods in Europe and, for much of the twentieth century, the most fashionable address in Athens, which is why it is full of good interwar and 1950s apartment buildings. Most people who pass through are catching a coach to central Greece, not stopping.

The shops and restaurants cluster on Skoufa, Tsakalof, Voukourestiou, Patriarchou Ioakim, Kanari, Loukianou, Milioni and Kapsali.

For a visitor there is essentially nothing here: no sights, no bar strip, no metro station.

Mostly, yes. Violent crime against visitors is rare and the usual problem is theft. What changes after dark is specific rather than general — a handful of named squares and streets — and each neighbourhood below says what its own version of that is.
