Omonia scores 0 out of 100 for violent crime — high crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 9,359 people at 16,579 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
Omonia is central Athens's transport and commercial hinge: a two-line metro interchange where Panepistimiou, Stadiou, Athinas, Piraeus and Agiou Konstantinou meet. The square was rebuilt with a fountain and new lighting under the city's 'Omonia as it was' plan, and branded hotels have moved back onto it. What people mean by 'Omonia', though, is usually the grid of narrow streets behind it.
After the shutters come down, the side streets change, not the avenues. Greek press reporting has repeatedly documented open dealing, street sex work and rough sleeping on and around Sokratous, Menandrou, Geraniou and Agiou Konstantinou.
Skip it for a first trip. Rates are low and the transport unbeatable, but you arrive and leave through the roughest blocks in the centre. Syntagma, Monastiraki or Koukaki cost a little more and spare you that.
Reputation against reality. Reputation and reality diverge in both directions. The square itself is much better than its 2010s reputation - repaved, fountain back, chain hotels investing - and the main avenues are ordinary busy city streets at any hour. But the two or three narrow streets behind it are genuinely bad and have not improved; the Mayor of Athens said in January 2026 that 'central streets cannot become drug markets'. Judging Omonia by the square flatters it; judging it by Sokratous damns the whole district unfairly.
