The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Vathi is a small square and the blocks around it north-west of Omonia, where Marni meets Acharnon and Liosion. A respectable bourgeois district in the 19th century, it is now a poor, heavily migrant residential pocket with cheap hotels, wholesale shops and nothing for a visitor. The Hellenic Police list it by name in the 'second sector' of their central Athens drug and petty-crime operation.
Lighting is poor, the shops close early and the square empties of anyone with somewhere else to be. This is the one central square on this list where guides and residents agree you should not linger after dark.
No. There are genuinely cheap beds here and they are cheap for a reason: nothing to see, a 20-minute walk to anything you came for, and the worst-lit approach in the centre. Not for any traveller type.
Reputation against reality. This is one of the few central Athens areas where the bad reputation is, if anything, understated in English-language sources - largely because almost no tourist ever goes there, so it generates few reviews and few forum threads. It is not dangerous in the sense of being attacked; it is a place where a visitor has no business and no reason to be.
