Aegina scores 88 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for violent crime — very low crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 13,056 people (2021 census), 148 per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Aegina is actually like
Aegina is a Saronic Gulf island about 27 km from Athens: roughly 40 minutes from Piraeus by hydrofoil or an hour on a conventional ferry. About 6,980 of its 12,911 residents (2021 census) live in Aegina town, the port and capital at the island's north-western tip, where neoclassical houses line a busy harbour promenade. Agia Marina, on the east coast a few minutes from the Temple of Aphaia (around 490 BC), is the main beach resort, and Perdika is a fishing village of seafood tavernas 9 km south of town. People come for the temple, the Agios Nektarios monastery, the deserted medieval capital of Palaiochora and the island's protected-origin pistachios, and many Athenians keep a summer house here.
After dark
Evenings centre on the town harbour. From 26 June to 20 September 2026 the waterfront avenue, Leoforos Dimokratias, and the side streets running into it were closed to cars from 21:30 (22:00 on Fridays and Sundays) until 00:30, so the promenade is car-free at its busiest hours. The resorts are quieter after dark: Agia Marina works better as a beach base than as a night out.
What to watch for
- Phone scams: on the afternoon of Sunday 2 August 2026 three residents in the Agioi area got near-simultaneous calls claiming a child had been badly hurt and demanding €20,000 for surgery; the callers knew the children's first names
- Shop break-ins in the villages: overnight on 9 August 2026 three shops in Marathonas and Kypseli were broken into and cash taken, with two more failed attempts; Aegina police arrested a suspect the next day
- Thin policing in peak season: in April 2026 the Piraeus police union said the Aegina station had at most 20 officers against a required 30 and one working patrol car out of five, while the island's summer population reaches about 50,000 a day
- Road crashes and ambulance cover: on 4 May 2026 a motorcyclist hurt in a collision with a car at the Thomaidou–Kyverneiou junction in the town centre was taken to the health centre in a police car because no ambulance driver was on shift; local press describes a long-running shortage of drivers
- Wildfire risk in high summer: the Temple of Aphaia site was closed on 13 August 2026 because Aegina was at category 5 (alert) on the national fire-risk map
Staying here
Yes, and Aegina town is the easiest base: the ferries arrive there, it has the widest choice of rooms and restaurants, and it is walkable. Agia Marina suits families who mainly want the beach, and Perdika suits couples who want a quiet fishing village with good fish tavernas.
