Koukaki is the residential triangle south-west of the Acropolis, roughly bounded by Dionysiou Areopagitou, Syngrou, Drakou and Garivaldi - about a square kilometre you can cross on foot in fifteen minutes. It has the highest concentration of genuine neighbourhood tavernas in central Athens, a strong cafe scene on the pedestrianised Drakou and Georgiou Olympiou streets, and three metro stations on its edges (Acropolis, Syngrou-Fix, Neos Kosmos).
After dark
Ordinary residential Athens: people eating outside, families about, bars around Drakou busy until late. It is repeatedly named as one of the most comfortable areas in the city for walking alone after dark.

Staying here
The best all-round base for most visitors - five minutes to the Acropolis Museum, ten to the site, and real neighbourhood food. It is no longer the cheap option it was; prices have risen with its popularity, and the streets nearest the museum now feel visitor-oriented.
Reputation against reality. Koukaki's reputation has caught up with reality - it went from unknown to 'best place to stay in Athens' in about a decade, and the honest current caveat is price and a degree of over-tourism on the museum side rather than safety.
