Dourgouti scores 33 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Dourgouti has no police figures of its own. Its estimate is Athens's rate — Athens scores 25 for overall safety — and the 8 points between them come from how the model shares Athens's total out, not from anything measured in Dourgouti. An estimated 14,159 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Dourgouti is actually like
Dourgouti is the old refugee quarter inside Neos Kosmos, near the tram tracks, where Armenian and then Asia Minor refugees were housed from 1922 and where the state replaced the shacks with public housing blocks between the late 1930s and 1971. It remains one of the most mixed places in central Athens, where descendants of the first refugee families still live.
After dark
Ordinary residential quiet. The blocks are worn and the internal courtyards and stairwells are poorly lit, which reads as intimidating to an outsider more than it reflects any documented risk.
What to watch for
- Unlit internal courtyards and stairwells in the ageing public housing blocks around Sfingos and Rene Pyo
- Its proximity to the Syngrou corridor and the tram tracks, which is the part of Neos Kosmos with documented night incidents
- Very few legitimate short lets: an unusually cheap listing here is worth questioning
Staying here
Not a visitor area. There are very few legitimate short lets and nothing to see. Stay in Koukaki or the northern end of Neos Kosmos and walk down if you are curious.
Reputation against reality. Residents themselves dropped the name Dourgouti in favour of 'Neos Kosmos' because it carried the stigma of the old shanty town. The name still triggers an outdated slum association in Greek that the place no longer earns.
