Crime in Greece by region: what the police figures show

By the SafetyMap team ·

Greece publishes police-recorded crime by region through Eurostat, and it is the only official source that puts reported crime on a map of the country. Averaged over 2021–2024, Greece records about 744 property offences and 101 violent offences a year for every 100,000 residents — but the regions are far apart.

Where the figures come from

The numbers are Eurostat's crim_gen_reg dataset: offences recorded by the Hellenic Police in each NUTS 3 region, per 100,000 inhabitants. We use the mean of 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 — four years rather than one, because a small region can double or halve from one year to the next — and leave out 2020, when lockdowns lowered every figure. Attica is published only as a whole, so it appears here as one region. How the scores are built.

Property crime: the two big cities lead

Thessaloniki records the most property crime per resident: about 1,379 offences per 100,000 a year, ahead of Attica with 1,241 and far above the Greek level of 744. Its burglary rate, 333 per 100,000, is twice Attica's 165. At the other end, Evrytania, Kastoria, Kozani and Grevena, Florina and the island of Chios all record fewer than 90.

Violent crime: highest where the visitors are

Violent offences — assault, robbery and intentional homicide together — are highest on Zakynthos (166 per 100,000), in Attica (145) and in the Cyclades (124). Assault is most of it everywhere. Robbery is an offence of the big cities: Attica's 55 per 100,000 and Thessaloniki's 35 are far ahead of the next, Euboea with 17 and Achaea with 11.
