Burglary, theft and car theft in Greece: where the rates are highest

By the SafetyMap team ·

Property offences are most of the crime the Greek police record: about 744 a year for every 100,000 residents, against 101 violent offences. Theft is 617 of them — 166 of those the theft of a motor vehicle — and burglary 127, and each follows its own map.

Theft and burglary follow the cities

Theft is highest in Attica (1,076 per 100,000 a year) and Thessaloniki (1,047), then drops to 577 in Corinthia and 497 in Phthiotis. Burglary has a different leader and a different order: Thessaloniki 333, Chalkidiki 196, Corinthia 185, Phthiotis 178, and only then Attica with 165. Chalkidiki, Corinthia and Phthiotis all record more burglaries per resident than Attica does.

Vehicle theft has a map of its own

The theft of a motor vehicle is highest in Attica (288 per 100,000 a year), ahead of Xanthi (240) and Thessaloniki (209), and then Magnesia and the Sporades (151) and the Cyclades (137). Xanthi is the exception to every other pattern here: it has one of the lowest burglary rates in Greece, 15 per 100,000, and one of the highest rates of vehicle theft.

Where property crime is rare

Chios records 7 burglaries per 100,000 residents a year, the lowest rate in the country, and Drama, Evrytania, Florina and Xanthi between 13 and 15. Taking all property offences together, the lowest rates are in Chios, Evrytania, Kastoria, Kozani and Grevena, and Florina — mountain and island units.

A rate is offences per resident. Recorded offences also depend on how many are reported: a stolen phone is often reported for insurance, a pickpocketed wallet much less often, and neither shows where in a region it happened. The map shows these regional figures shared out across municipalities and districts — as an estimate, marked as one. How the scores are built.
