Gazi scores 21 out of 100 for overall safety — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 4,811 people at 16,579 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
Gazi is the old gasworks district west of Kerameikos, rebuilt around Technopolis - the 19th-century gas plant now a municipal culture venue. Since the early 2000s the warehouses around it have become the largest concentration of clubs and bars in central Athens, and the centre of the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife. By day it is quiet and visibly unfinished, car workshops and empty sheds among the venues.
This is the one part of central Athens that genuinely runs until dawn: the Iera Odos and Konstantinoupoleos club strip does not fill until about 2am. It is crowded, well lit and heavily policed by Athenian standards.
Book here only if you are coming for the nightlife or want the metro. It is loud every weekend, and the walk to the Acropolis is 25 minutes. Couples and families are better served in Thiseio or Koukaki, ten minutes away.
Reputation against reality. Gazi's reputation for edginess is left over from the pre-Technopolis era. The honest current caveat is not crime but noise and emptiness: it is a nightlife monoculture, packed at 3am on Saturday and lifeless at 11am on Tuesday, and visitors expecting a neighbourhood find an entertainment zone.
