Rouf is the half-industrial wedge south-west of Omonia along Pireos and Petrou Ralli, named after a Bavarian businessman who bought the land under King Otto. Warehouses, car workshops, an army camp with recruitment offices, a suburban rail station and a small park make up most of it; the draws are the Rouf theatre housed in a converted railway carriage, which has run since 1997, and the spillover of Gazi's nightlife along Pireos. Very few visitors ever have reason to walk here.
Almost nobody is on the street once the workshops close. It is not a crime hotspot so much as an empty one - long blocks, poor lighting, no passing footfall between the Gazi end and Petralona.
No. There is essentially no hotel stock, nothing to walk to, and a fifteen-minute trudge past empty warehouses to anywhere you want to be. Book Kerameikos or Petralona instead and visit for the theatre.
Reputation against reality. Rouf has no traveller reputation whatsoever, good or bad; it appears on maps as a name and in listings as a theatre. The Greek left-wing daily Avgi called it 'a typical example of the degraded centre of Athens, with its beautiful points and its problems', which is still the fairest summary.
