The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. The hill above Mikrolimano, and the prettiest thing in Piraeus: neoclassical houses, stepped lanes, Profitis Ilias church and the Veakeio at the top, cafes along Papanastasiou and around Idis. Mikrolimano below is a fishing cove turned restaurant row. Settled and middle-class; visitors come for the view and dinner.
Well-lit and busy on the promenade and the stairways down to Mikrolimano. On 23 May 2026 at about 05:30, police checking a man outside a Mikrolimano shop shot and wounded him; six hand grenades and a loaded magazine were recovered. A targeted dawn encounter, not a hazard to diners.
The nicest place to sleep in Piraeus and safe to walk, but a hilly 25-30 minutes from the ferry gates, with steps. Fine for a night or two; poor for a 06:00 departure unless you pre-book a taxi.
Reputation against reality. Kastella's reputation is if anything better than the rest of Piraeus deserves, and it is fairly earned.
