It was laid out in the 1960s to a design by the architect Aris Konstantinidis as low-rise workers' housing with parks between the blocks, and it houses a mix of long-settled families and later arrivals. Its main street is Ethnikis Antistaseos. Academic work on social division within Kalamaria treats Foinikas as the municipality's stigmatised edge, and the neighbourhood has had public-realm upgrades.
Cut off from the rest of Kalamaria by the airport road and the drainage canal, with little passing traffic. Quiet rather than threatening; there is no documented pattern of night-time crime against outsiders here.
Not a visitor base - far from the sights and the seafront, with little to walk to. Fine to visit.
Reputation against reality. Foinikas carries a reputation within Thessaloniki out of proportion to anything documented. Reporting describes a neighbourhood marked by neglect and stigma that has since had lighting, green space and public-realm investment - not a crime hotspot.
