  FragkomachalasΦραγκομαχαλάς · above-average crimeThe old 'Frankish quarter' between Kapodistriou, Valaoritou, Syngrou, Paikou, Vilara, Katholikon, Leontos Sofou and Frangon — the city's European merchant and banking district in the nineteenth century, holding 34 of Thessaloniki's 66 banking houses in the 1920s. Warehouses became garment workshops, then, from about 2008, bars. Today it is half handsome neoclassical shell and half late-night drinking strip, with Valaoritou the loudest axis and Frangon still lined with empty buildings.

  VardarisΒαρδάρης · above-average crimePlateia Dimokratias — Vardaris square — is the city's kilometre zero, where Egnatia ends and Monastiriou runs west to the railway station. It is a transport and wholesale belt: bus agencies, budget hotels, textile shops, and the OKANA drug-services branch at Monastiriou 4. Greek press has described it going from the city's busiest point to outright degradation, with abandoned and half-demolished buildings. Two projects should change that: the square's redesign, and the National Holocaust Museum beside the old station.

  XirokriniΞηροκρήνη · above-average crimeThe north-western working district of the 2nd Municipal Community, settled after 1922 by refugees from Constantinople, Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace and named after a Constantinople quarter. It carries the city's infrastructure: the New Railway Station of 1961, the old station, the port approaches, Monastiriou and Agiou Dimitriou running through it, and the twelve-storey worker housing blocks that are local landmarks. Greek local history writing says plainly that it remains downgraded, with much the same problems it had in the 1920s.

  MalakopiΜαλακοπή · above-average crimeA refugee settlement on the south-eastern edge of the conurbation, named by its first inhabitants after Malakopi in Cappadocia, who arrived with the 1923-24 population exchange. It straddles a municipal boundary: most of it lies in the Municipality of Pylaia-Chortiatis, and only the northern part falls inside the Municipality of Thessaloniki, where the settlement marks one edge of the 4th Municipal Community. It is entirely residential — apartment blocks, a few surviving refugee houses, local shops.

  Watch for: Boundary confusion: addresses here may fall under Pylaia-Chortiatis rather than Thessaloniki for services and policing

  TriandriaΤριανδρία · above-average crimeAn independent municipality until it was absorbed into the Municipality of Thessaloniki on 1 January 2011, Triandria is a compact, dense, north-eastern district pressed against the Seih Sou forest above Toumba. It is unglamorous and cheap: 30-50 square metre studios, a heavy student population drawn by the price and the bus links to the universities, small squares and neighbourhood shops. Almost no visitors come here, and the police station covering it also covers Toumba, from Lykaonos 13.

  Watch for: Late-night armed robberies of kiosks and mini-markets

  CharilaouΧαριλάου · above-average crimeBuilt from 1920 on land bought by the Thracian banker Epameinondas Charilaos to house people burnt out by the 1917 fire — the first 160 single-storey houses went up around the old French military hospital, and were sold to homeless Thessalonians and to White Russian emigres, who gave the district a Russian colony and its Russian church. It is now dense, middle-income and thoroughly local, with Plateia Charilaou at its centre and Aris's Kleanthis Vikelidis stadium inside it.

  EvangelistriaΕυαγγελίστρια · above-average crimeA dense residential grid on the slope above Agiou Dimitriou, named for the Evangelistria cemetery founded in 1875, with the Armenian (1885-87) and Protestant (1887) cemeteries alongside — a set the municipality had designated a protected monument. Nobody visits for nightlife; people come for the cemeteries' funerary sculpture, for the churches, or because they live here. It is ordinary, middle-income, heavily parked-up Thessaloniki, with student flats filling in toward Saranta Ekklisies.

  KallitheaΚαλλιθέα · above-average crimeA small quarter high in Ano Poli built around Plateia Kallitheas, reached up from Olympiados and Apostolou Pavlou. It is residential — restored refugee houses, low blocks, a couple of kafeneia — but its square is one of the city's magnet spots for open-air drinking, because it is enclosed, panoramic and free. That has made it the subject of years of complaints, police operations and clean-ups, and in 2024 of a march against the policing itself.

  Mitropolitiki Periochi ThessalonikisΜητροπολιτική Περιοχή Θεσσαλονίκης · above-average crimeThe central metropolitan strip: Aristotelous Square and its axis from Egnatia down to Nikis Avenue, plus Tsimiski, the Kapani and Modiano markets, the port frontage and the waterfront to the White Tower and the Nea Paralia. This is where the city's offices, shopping, hotels, cruise passengers and evening crowds concentrate, and it stays busy until very late. Short-let registrations across this 1st Municipal District are frozen through 2027.

  AnalipsiΑνάληψη · above-average crimePart of the eastern 5th Municipal Community, historically the Exoches or Pyrgoi villa belt, now a solidly middle-class residential strip between Papanastasiou, 25is Martiou and the waterfront. It has cafes, private schools, clinics and a metro station of its own since November 2024. Visitors mostly pass through on the way to the Nea Paralia; residents are a notably older population, which is reflected in the kind of crime that gets reported here.

Cheap tavernas, record and book shops, alternative bars, Erasmus flatshares: a 2023 survey counted 93 shops on the Gounari pedestrian street alone, with older flats letting at €300-400 a month. It is also where marches along Egnatia pass, so closures and police lines are routine rather than alarming.

Its own square has been an open sore for three decades; a redesign study finished in 2025, with construction from 2026 over about three years.

Nobody lives here in numbers any more: by day it is cruise passengers and long lunches, by night the default night out for Thessalonians and visitors alike.   Panagia FaneromeniΠαναγία Φανερωμένη · above-average crimeA small working-class quarter in the 2nd Municipal Community, tucked behind the north-western walls where the Municipality of Thessaloniki runs into Neapoli and Sykies. It sits only four streets above Egnatia and about twenty minutes' walk from Aristotelous, but feels detached: low houses, balconies facing each other, card games outside kafeneia, refugee-settlement history and a genuinely mixed population. Reporting calls it one of the city's downgraded neighbourhoods — no bank, no ATM, ageing building stock — rather than a dangerous one.

  Watch for: Poor street lighting and steep, narrow lanes on the approach from the walls

  Ano ToumbaΆνω Τούμπα · above-average crimeThe upper, unplanned half of Toumba, thrown up from 1923 by refugees from Asia Minor, Pontos and Eastern Thrace on the hill that gave the district its name. It is steep, irregular and densely built, with Plateia Agiou Theraponta — once the Carpet-Weavers' Square — at its heart and Anatolikis Thrakis street as its commercial spine. It is also PAOK country: the Toumba stadium sits in it, and matchdays reorganise the whole neighbourhood.

  Kato ToumbaΚάτω Τούμπα · above-average crimeThe planned half of Toumba, laid out between 1924 and 1938 with some 500 brick houses on a regular grid running down toward Papafi and Grigoriou Lampraki. Flatter, denser and more commercial than Ano Toumba, with the district's shops, schools and the Toumba-Triandria police station at Lykaonos 13. It is the archetypal ordinary Thessaloniki neighbourhood: refugee-descended families, apartment blocks, bakeries, and no tourist function at all.

  Saranta EkklisiesΣαράντα Εκκλησίες · above-average crimeA refugee settlement founded in the 1920s by people from Saranta Ekklisies in Eastern Thrace, on the slope east of Ano Poli; the streets are still named after lost Thracian towns — Raidestos, Agathoupolis, Skopos, Kissani, Vasiliko. It is now overwhelmingly a student quarter: three of the five Aristotle University halls of residence sit here, alongside the seismology department, the Teloglion Foundation, the Forest Theatre and the zoo, with old blocks and a few abandoned houses between them.

  Watch for: Unlit steep lanes on the upper edge toward the Seih Sou forest

Vlatades — the old 'Tsaous Monastiri' — is the only Byzantine monastery in Thessaloniki still functioning, and its terrace is the balcony the whole city is photographed from. Everything here is oriented to visitors and the monastic community: no shops to speak of, a couple of kiosks, coaches and taxis at the gate.

  Koule KafeΚουλέ Καφέ · above-average crimeThe upper-western part of Ano Poli around Plateia Romfeis, beside Vlatades monastery — before the war it was described as the oldest and most attractive quarter in the city, and it is the 'Chora' of the writer Antonis Sourounis. Greece's largest and best-preserved Byzantine bath stands at Theotokopoulou 17. Today it is residential, with a scatter of tavernas and a lot of restored refugee housing; visitors come for the bath, the walls and the walk down.

It is a quiet, late-built residential district that has just acquired a citywide role: the metro line that opened on 30 November 2024 terminates here, and the site is being developed with a large park-and-ride and a substantial new park. Otherwise it is apartment blocks, schools and sports grounds.

  NtepoΝτεπώ · above-average crimeNamed after the old tram depot, Ntepo belongs to the 5th Municipal Community and is the eastern city's most distinctive historic pocket: this was the Exoches, the villa suburb of wealthy Thessalonians, known locally as Hamidiye. Belle Epoque villas survive around the Uziel settlement beside ordinary apartment blocks; the Vafopouleio cultural centre, the Poseidonio pool and the Concert Hall anchor local life. Vasilissis Olgas is the commercial spine, and the Papafi metro station opened here with the line in November 2024.

  TsinariΤσινάρι · above-average crimeThe north-western pocket of Ano Poli, above the Dioikitirio, whose core is the tiny square where Alexandras Papadopoulou meets Kleious. The name comes from Turkish çınarlı, 'with a plane tree'. The quarter escaped the 1917 fire, so the original street pattern survives — narrow cobbled lanes and dead ends — and the Tsinari kafeneio-ouzeri at Alexandras Papadopoulou 72 has traded on the corner since 1885. People come for one thing: mezedes under the plane tree.

  Ano PoliΆνω Πόλη · above-average crimeThe one large quarter the 1917 fire largely spared, so the Ottoman and Byzantine street plan survives inside the upper walls, around the Trigonio tower, Vlatades and the Eptapyrgio fortress. It is genuinely residential — long-settled families, students, and a fast-growing layer of short-let guests — and visitors come for monuments, tavernas and the view down over the Thermaic Gulf. The municipality began clearing derelict, repeatedly burnt buildings here in October 2025.
