Ntepo crime and safety

Ντεπώ · district

31/100

Ntepo scores 31 out of 100 for overall safetyabove-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 28,278 people at 15,626 people per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.

What Ntepo is actually like

A good place to stayQuiet and well-lit, and the sort of place most visitors are pointed to.

Named after the old tram depot, Ntepo belongs to the 5th Municipal Community and is the eastern city's most distinctive historic pocket: this was the Exoches, the villa suburb of wealthy Thessalonians, known locally as Hamidiye. Belle Epoque villas survive around the Uziel settlement beside ordinary apartment blocks; the Vafopouleio cultural centre, the Poseidonio pool and the Concert Hall anchor local life. Vasilissis Olgas is the commercial spine, and the Papafi metro station opened here with the line in November 2024.

After dark

Leafy, quiet and thoroughly domestic; cafes and tavernas rather than bars. The only conspicuous dead space is the disused tram depot itself.

What to watch for

  • The long-disused tram depot site, which local reporting describes as abandoned
  • Traffic on Vasilissis Olgas, which is fast and wide

Staying here

A calm, green base with a metro station, good for families and for visitors who want a real neighbourhood rather than the centre. Trade-off is a 10-15 minute ride to the sights.

Reputation against reality. No safety reputation to speak of, good or bad — it is one of the quieter parts of the municipality.
