Zarouchleika scores 38 out of 100 for property crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 2,210 people at 618 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
One of the largest neighbourhoods in Patras, in the southern municipal sector, first settled after 1850 by farming families from Zaroukhla in the Kalavryta highlands and an independent community from 1912 until the city absorbed it. Today it is a big, mixed, mostly working-class district of post-war apartment blocks and older houses, with a workers' housing estate on Evias street at its core, local shops and schools. Nobody visits; people live here because it is cheap and close to the southern approaches. Against neighbouring Taraboura and Begoulaki it is much bigger and more built up, and against them it carries specific documented policing attention that they do not.
The residential streets are ordinary, but this is one of six districts put under targeted police patrols in July 2025, and police drug reporting in 2026 describes discreet transactions in dark, poorly lit spots here and at the Lefka workers' housing. The Evias street workers' estate has been reported as run down with rudimentary lighting in places.
No — there is almost nothing to book, it is 3-4 km from the centre and it is one of the named patrol-priority districts. It is not on a sensible route to either port. Choose the centre, Ano Poli or Agios Andreas instead.
Reputation against reality. Anglophone safety sites list Zarouchleika as the Patras district to avoid at night. That is a fair flag but a blunt one: this is a district of some tens of thousands of ordinary residents, and the documented problems attach to particular blocks and the workers' estate rather than to the whole area.
