Kalamaria is the affluent coastal municipality southeast of the centre, about 90,000 people, built as a refugee settlement after 1922 and now Thessaloniki's most desirable non-central address. Since the 2025 metro extension it has five underground stations (Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, Mikra), putting the centre fifteen minutes away.
