The great belvedere square on the shelf between the upper and lower city, formerly Plateia Benizelou Roufou, ringed by neoclassical facades and palm trees and long used as a postcard image of Patras. It is a residential and cafe quarter rather than a nightlife one, with an older resident population, a few hotels and the Skagiopouleio children's home on Benizelou Roufou street just below. People come for the view over the gulf, the church of Agios Andreas Palaios nearby and the walk down to the centre. Against neighbouring Ano Poli it is flatter, easier to walk and better connected, but its centrepiece square has been visibly let go and is currently the shabbiest of the city's big public spaces.
Quiet and residential rather than threatening. The square itself is poorly maintained — dead lawns, a dry fountain, patchy lighting — and press coverage describes it as delivered over to illegality and drugs in the recent past, though it is not on the current police patrol priority list. Cafes around the edge keep it populated until midnight.
Yes, a reasonable and fairly quiet base with hotels and short lets, within a 10-15 minute walk of the centre. For an early Italy ferry from the South (New) Port you will still need a taxi; for the North (Old) Port it is walkable with light luggage.
Reputation against reality. Reputation lags reality downward: locals still talk about the square as a drugs spot, but the documented drug geography of 2026 puts the concentrations at Plateia Olgas, Plateia Pindou and Plateia Eleftherias, not here. Its actual problem is neglect, not crime.
