Ano Kypseli violent crime

Άνω Κυψέλη · district

31/100

Ano Kypseli scores 31 out of 100 for violent crimeabove-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 13,788 people at 16,579 people per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.

What Ano Kypseli is actually like

Ordinary city precautionsNo specific problem on record beyond what any dense city centre has.

The uphill extension of Kypseli, built out during the fastest phase of Athenian urbanisation and reckoned among the most densely built and populated parts of the whole city. Its one distinguishing feature is the Tourkovounia rock formations on its eastern edge, an unusually raw piece of landscape for an inner-city district. It is almost purely residential — apartment blocks, corner shops, schools, church squares — with mixed Greek and migrant households and almost no free public space.

After dark

Sleepy and residential, with the evening life concentrated downhill on Fokionos Negri; the steep streets and the unlit approaches to the Tourkovounia slopes are empty after dark.

What to watch for

  • The unlit and unmanaged Tourkovounia slopes on the eastern edge
  • Steep, narrow streets with parked cars and almost no footfall late at night
  • Very little green or open space, so nowhere is overlooked

Staying here

Fine for a long stay if you do not mind the hill and the walk down to the metro, and quieter than Kypseli proper. Poor value for a short trip — you pay in transit time what you save in rent.

Reputation against reality. Does not appear by name in the police plan or in travel-safety guides; it inherits Kypseli's reputation without having Kypseli's Patision edge.
