Violent crime in Asyrmatos

Ασύρματος · District

Modelled estimate — how it is made
31/100

By type of crime

Asyrmatos scores 31 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for violent crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Asyrmatos has no police figures of its own. Its estimate is Athens's rate — Athens scores 23 for violent crime — and the 8 points between them come from how the model shares Athens's total out, not from anything measured in Asyrmatos. An estimated 8,881 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Asyrmatos is actually like

Fine by day, care after darkThe note names what changes after dark and where; by day the usual precautions apply.

Asyrmatos — also called Attaliotika or ta Petrina — is a small settlement of roughly 170 stone houses on the western slope of Filopappou above Ano Petralona, built in 1955-57 for refugees from Attaleia using stone salvaged from the burnt naval wireless school. It is one of the prettiest corners of Athens and the setting of the censored 1961 film Synoikia to Oneiro.

After dark

The houses themselves are quiet and neighbourly. The problem is the route home: the unlit Filopappou and Pnyx footpaths that link it to Thiseio and Koukaki are the most consistently documented mugging location in central Athens.

What to watch for

  • The Filopappou and Pnyx footpaths connecting the settlement to Thiseio and Koukaki — the most consistently documented mugging location in central Athens, including a fatal attack about 100 yards below the Philopappou Monument and a knife robbery of a couple
  • Filopappou is a named target sector in the Hellenic Police 24/7 micro-crime patrol plan for 2026
  • Reported knifepoint robberies on the hill have occurred in daylight as well as after dark
  • Steep stepped lanes with no vehicle access, so no quick exit if you do run into trouble

Staying here

Charming for a stay if you arrive and leave by the Ano Petralona streets rather than over the hill. Avoid if you will regularly be walking home late across the archaeological paths in the dark.

Reputation against reality. The old 'shanty town' label attaches to its 1920s-50s history, not to the present stone-house settlement, which is now among the most sought-after addresses on the hill.
