Akropoli scores 31 out of 100 for violent crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 9,362 people at 16,579 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
'Akropoli' as a place to stay means the blocks immediately around the Acropolis metro station and the Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian avenue that curves along the south slope past the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Theatre of Dionysus. It is the most visited ground in Greece: the south entrance to the archaeological site, the Acropolis Museum, cafes under the plane trees, and the evening promenade that links Makrygianni to Thiseio. Almost nobody actually lives on it.
Dionysiou Areopagitou stays lit, busy and pleasant late into the evening - it is one of the city's standard night walks. The site itself closes and the perimeter paths behind it go dark and empty.
You cannot really stay 'on' the Acropolis; what you book is Makrygianni or Koukaki. If you want to be a five-minute walk from the south entrance and don't mind paying for it, this is the right corner of the city.
Reputation against reality. The headline statistic - the Acropolis police district topping Attica for thefts and burglaries in 2025 - looks alarming and is really a footfall artefact: this is where several million visitors and their bags are concentrated. The July 2026 stabbing was widely reported and was, on the police account, a random attack by a mentally ill man rather than anything about the area.
