Modelled estimate — how it is made
17/100

By type of crime

Gazi scores 17 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for violent crime — high crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Gazi has no police figures of its own. Its estimate starts from Athens's rate — Athens scores 23 for violent crime — and is adjusted for documented local reporting about Gazi. An estimated 4,811 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Gazi is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

Gazi is the old gasworks district west of Kerameikos, rebuilt around Technopolis - the 19th-century gas plant now a municipal culture venue. Since the early 2000s the warehouses around it have become the largest concentration of clubs and bars in central Athens, and the centre of the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife. By day it is quiet and visibly unfinished, car workshops and empty sheds among the venues.

After dark

This is the one part of central Athens that genuinely runs until dawn: the Iera Odos and Konstantinoupoleos club strip does not fill until about 2am. It is crowded, well lit and heavily policed by Athenian standards.

What to watch for

  • Crowd-and-drink risks rather than street crime: guides advise the usual care with drinks in a district where clubs fill after 2am
  • The area falls under the Hellenic Police 'second sector' alongside Kerameikos in the 2026 central Athens operation
  • Away from Technopolis and the club streets, the surrounding blocks are half-derelict industrial - abandoned warehouses and car workshops with nobody around
  • Rick Steves forum posters advise not going into Gazi if there is a demonstration on

Staying here

Book here only if you are coming for the nightlife or want the metro. It is loud every weekend, and the walk to the Acropolis is 25 minutes. Couples and families are better served in Thiseio or Koukaki, ten minutes away.

Reputation against reality. Gazi's reputation for edginess is left over from the pre-Technopolis era. The honest current caveat is not crime but noise and emptiness: it is a nightlife monoculture, packed at 3am on Saturday and lifeless at 11am on Tuesday, and visitors expecting a neighbourhood find an entertainment zone.
