Pevkakia is a micro-neighbourhood inside Neapoli, on the lower slopes of Lycabettus between Exarcheia and Kolonaki. It is defined in local histories as roughly the block bounded by Solonos, Sina, Asklipiou and Sarantapichou, around the church of Agios Nikolaos Pefkakia (consecrated 1895); the name comes from the pine woods that once covered this side of the hill. It is quiet, residential, steeply stepped, and has no tourist attractions of its own.

After dark

Residential calm. Streets empty early because there is almost no nightlife here - the bars are downhill in Exarcheia and uphill in Kolonaki - but the district is well lit and overlooked by apartment windows.

What to watch for

  • No area-specific documented risks found in police reporting or Greek press for Pevkakia itself
  • It is a buffer between Exarcheia and Kolonaki, so demonstration-related police activity on Exarcheia days can spill uphill along Solonos and Asklipiou
  • Steep, stepped and poorly served by the metro - Panepistimio and Evangelismos are both a walk away

Staying here

A good, under-priced option for repeat visitors who want a real neighbourhood and don't mind a fifteen-minute walk to Syntagma and a lot of steps. Poor for anyone with heavy bags, limited mobility or an early flight.

Reputation against reality. Pevkakia has no reputation at all in English-language travel writing - it is usually swallowed by 'Exarcheia' or 'Kolonaki' depending on which the writer wants to invoke. Readers who see an address on Asklipiou described as 'Exarcheia' should know this is the calm, bourgeois end of that slope, not the square.
