Agia Varvara scores 51 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Agia Varvara has no police figures of its own, so its estimate is Patras's: both score 51 for overall safety. An estimated 1,897 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Agia Varvara is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

A residential neighbourhood extending south of the city centre at close range, named for its parish church. It is ordinary inner Patras: apartment blocks of various vintages, a few older houses, neighbourhood shops and schools, with a mix of families, older residents and students taking advantage of the short walk into town. There is no visitor attraction. Against Agia Triada, its immediate neighbour toward Prosfygika, it is quieter and has no documented policing profile; against Krya Iteon and the districts further south it is much closer in and better connected, which makes it one of the more liveable of the southern inner quarters.

After dark

Quiet residential streets with reasonable lighting on the main axes. Some late footfall from people walking home from the centre. No incidents, patrol priorities or burglary listings in the 2024-2026 record name Agia Varvara.

What to watch for

  • Ordinary street-theft precautions on the walk in and out of the centre after dark
  • Standard home security

Staying here

Reasonable for a cheap short let within walking distance of the centre. For an early Italy ferry it is better placed than most inner districts — you are on the southern side — but still take a taxi to the South Port gates.
