Tabahana scores 52 out of 100 for overall safety — average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 537 people at 618 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
An old working quarter on the transition between the upper and lower city, its name from the Turkish tabakhane, the tanneries that once worked here. It borders Panagia Alexiotissa and runs into Sinora, Marouda, Glaraki, Pagona, Drosia and Aroi, and today is ordinary low-rise Patras: small apartment blocks, workshops, kafeneia and long-settled families, with cheap rents drawing students and newcomers. Visitors have no particular reason to come except to walk between Ano Poli and the centre. Against the polished squares below it is scruffier and more lived-in; against Prosfygika or Zarouchleika it carries none of the same documented policing attention.
Quiet and residential. The streets are narrow and lighting is uneven in places, and there is little late footfall once the kafeneia close, which makes it feel emptier than it is risky. No incident or patrol reporting in the 2024-2026 record names Tabahana specifically.
Only if you want cheap and central and do not mind a plain street. There is little formal accommodation. For an early Italy ferry it is workable but you will want a taxi to the South Port; nothing here is walkable to the Italy gates.
Reputation against reality. No documented crime reputation either way — it is one of the genuinely unremarkable inner quarters that guides never mention.
