Kritika scores 52 out of 100 for overall safety — average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 791 people at 618 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
A small old quarter tucked beside the castle in the upper city, settled by Cretan refugees after the 1866 uprising and named for them. It is one of the most compact and least changed parts of Patras: single-storey and two-storey houses, narrow lanes, long-established families, and almost no commercial activity beyond a kafeneio or two. Visitors reach it by accident walking around the castle walls. Against the tourist-facing taverna streets of Ano Poli it is purely residential and quieter, and against Prosfygika, with which it shares a refugee-settlement origin, it has none of the documented policing problems — it is a small, settled, unremarkable neighbourhood.
Very quiet. Little through traffic and few people on the streets after dark, which is a matter of emptiness rather than danger. Lighting in the castle lanes is modest. Nothing in the 2024-2026 police or press record names Kritika.
There is very little to book here, but if you find a short let it is a calm and characterful spot. Not a sensible choice for an early Italy ferry — you are at the top of the hill and 5 km from the South Port gates.
