Gyzi is a tightly built 1960s-70s residential pocket between Pedion tou Areos, Polygono and Leoforos Alexandras, first settled by islanders from Tinos, Naxos and Andros and named after the painter Nikolaos Gyzis. It has almost no tourists, few bars and little green space, and is one of the last central districts where housing is still described as not yet unaffordable.

After dark

Quiet to the point of being deserted on the inner streets, with noise picking up only towards Alexandras. The unlit western edge along Pedion tou Areos is the part residents actually avoid after dark.

What to watch for

  • The dark, unlit western edge of the neighbourhood where it meets Pedion tou Areos — the park closes at 23:00 and its own residents' association describes it as unsafe at night because of broken lighting
  • Metro Line 4 construction hoardings near Leoforos Alexandras narrow pavements and create unlit gaps
  • Steep, poorly lit inner streets (Bousgou, Kalliga, Valtinon) with almost no foot traffic late

Staying here

Fine for a longer stay or a second visit if you want a real neighbourhood and a walk to Kolonaki. Poor for a short sightseeing trip — no metro station of its own yet, and very little open late.

Reputation against reality. Gyzi appears in Greek reporting on where Athenians feel unsafe, but that reflects fear-of-crime survey data and its proximity to Pedion tou Areos rather than recorded offences inside the neighbourhood.
