Ampelokipoi scores 33 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Ampelokipoi has no police figures of its own. Its estimate starts from Athens's rate — Athens scores 25 for overall safety — and is adjusted for documented local reporting about Ampelokipoi. An estimated 3,216 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Ampelokipoi is actually like
Ampelokipoi is the densest district in the Municipality of Athens and its least touristy big neighbourhood: offices, embassies, hospitals, the Panathinaikos ground on Alexandras Avenue and the Attica police headquarters (GADA) all sit inside it. Visitors come for the Megaro Moussikis concert hall, the cinemas, Eleftherias Park and the big Saturday street market rather than for sightseeing.
After dark
Mavili Square is the city's long-standing after-hours bar cluster and stays busy almost around the clock; the Panormou strip is young and lively. Away from those two poles the avenues empty out and feel bleak rather than dangerous.
What to watch for
- Pickpocketing on Metro Line 3 (Ampelokipoi, Panormou, Megaro Moussikis stations) — the Hellenic Police run a dedicated plain-clothes anti-pickpocket detail on the network
- The occupied Prosfygika housing blocks at Leoforos Alexandras 165-169: a long-running squat and political flashpoint with repeated police operations and an active eviction plan. Not a threat to passers-by, but do not wander into the courtyards
- Heavy, fast traffic on Alexandras, Kifissias, Mesogeion and Vasilissis Sofias; crossing on foot is the real hazard
- Crowd nights at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium on Alexandras bring police cordons and occasional football-related disorder
Staying here
Reasonable for a repeat visitor who wants metro access and lower prices, or for a business or hospital trip. A first-timer who wants to walk to the Acropolis should stay south in Pangrati, Mets or Koukaki instead.
Reputation against reality. Frequently assumed to be rough because it holds GADA, the courts and the Prosfygika squat. Greek and English guides consistently describe it as an ordinary, safe, densely populated urban district; the 2026 Hellenic Police micro-crime plan does not list it as a target sector.
