Kountouriotika crime and safety

Κουντουριώτικα · district

33/100

Kountouriotika scores 33 out of 100 for overall safetyabove-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 21,658 people at 16,579 people per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.

What Kountouriotika is actually like

Ordinary city precautionsNo specific problem on record beyond what any dense city centre has.

Kountouriotika is the western flank of Ampelokipoi, running from the American Embassy on Vasilissis Sofias up towards Gyzi, Neapoli and the foot of Lycabettus. It was laid out as a refugee settlement after the Asia Minor campaign, on land released by President Pavlos Kountouriotis, and is now ordinary dense apartment housing with embassy and office frontage on its southern edge.

After dark

Quiet, with heavy standing security around the embassy end and steady traffic on Vasilissis Sofias. The inner streets are dim but wholly residential, and the walk over to Kolonaki is short and lit.

What to watch for

  • Standing security and restricted movement around the US Embassy on Vasilissis Sofias; protests and marches regularly close this stretch
  • Dim inner residential streets with no bars or shops open late
  • Fast traffic on Vasilissis Sofias and Leoforos Alexandras

Staying here

Perfectly safe and close to both Kolonaki and Ampelokipoi metro, but there is no local scene to speak of. Book here for price and position, not for character.

Reputation against reality. Rarely named as an area in its own right — most listings and most residents call it Ampelokipoi or Neapoli. Safety commentary about Ampelokipoi applies.
