Crime and safety in Peiraiki

Πειραϊκή · District

Modelled estimate — how it is made
38/100

By type of crime

Peiraiki scores 38 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Peiraiki has no police figures of its own. Its estimate is Piraeus's rate — Piraeus scores 37 for overall safety — and the 1 point between them comes from how the model shares Piraeus's total out, not from anything measured in Peiraiki. An estimated 6,146 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Peiraiki is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

The rocky south-west tip of the peninsula, under the ancient Long Walls. Barely built on until the 1960s, when families from Kallipoli, Chatzikyriakeio and Freattyda moved out onto the new seafront; it meets Kallipoli at Filikis Etaireias. Akti Themistokleous is the point: fish tavernas, kafeneia and small bars along the water. The official Athens guide sends visitors here for seafood, naming Margaro, Yperokeanio and Ta Vrachia tis Peiraikis. Kallipoli's Saturday street market (laiki), 07:30-15:30, sets up on Marias Chatzikyriakou street, inside its outline on the map.

After dark

Lively where the tavernas cluster in summer, then long dark gaps of rock and low wall between them. Off-season the western stretch is genuinely empty. Nothing documented here in 2024-26.

Staying here

A quiet, pleasant base if you have an evening to spend, but the wrong side of the peninsula for a dawn ferry: a taxi ride from the gates, no metro. Book here for a holiday, not a 07:00 sailing.

Reputation against reality. Guidebook shorthand that lumps all of Piraeus outside the port and the marinas into 'avoid at night' does not fit Peiraiki, which is one of the calmer residential fronts in the city.
