Property crime in Akropoli

Ακρόπολη · District

Modelled estimate — how it is made
34/100

By type of crime

Akropoli scores 34 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for property crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Akropoli has no police figures of its own. Its estimate is Athens's rate — Athens scores 28 for property crime — and the 6 points between them come from how the model shares Athens's total out, not from anything measured in Akropoli. An estimated 9,362 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Akropoli is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

'Akropoli' as a place to stay means the blocks immediately around the Acropolis metro station and the Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian avenue that curves along the south slope past the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Theatre of Dionysus. It is the most visited ground in Greece: the south entrance to the archaeological site, the Acropolis Museum, cafes under the plane trees, and the evening promenade that links Makrygianni to Thiseio. Almost nobody actually lives on it.

After dark

Dionysiou Areopagitou stays lit, busy and pleasant late into the evening - it is one of the city's standard night walks. The site itself closes and the perimeter paths behind it go dark and empty.

What to watch for

  • Pickpocketing in the ticket and entrance queues and along Dionysiou Areopagitou - the police 'first sector' zone that produced 520 arrests in 2025 and 434 in January-August 2026
  • The Acropolis police district recorded 1,880 thefts and burglaries in 2025, the highest count in Attica
  • Chain-snatching: 13 arrests recorded in the Acropolis area in the 2026 police figures
  • Touts selling printed vouchers outside the entrance and fake Acropolis ticket websites

Staying here

You cannot really stay 'on' the Acropolis; what you book is Makrygianni or Koukaki. If you want to be a five-minute walk from the south entrance and don't mind paying for it, this is the right corner of the city.

Reputation against reality. The headline statistic - the Acropolis police district topping Attica for thefts and burglaries in 2025 - looks alarming and is really a footfall artefact: this is where several million visitors and their bags are concentrated. The July 2026 stabbing was widely reported and was, on the police account, a random attack by a mentally ill man rather than anything about the area.
