Asteroskopeio scores 34 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for property crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Asteroskopeio has no police figures of its own. Its estimate is Athens's rate — Athens scores 28 for property crime — and the 6 points between them come from how the model shares Athens's total out, not from anything measured in Asteroskopeio. An estimated 1,063 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Asteroskopeio is actually like
Asteroskopeio is the slope around the National Observatory on the Hill of the Nymphs, above Thiseio and beside Ano Petralona, in the belt of western hills that also holds the Pnyx and Filopappou. It is a handful of quiet streets, archaeological ground and pine, with Theophil Hansen's 1842-46 observatory building at the top and one of the best free views in the city.
After dark
The archaeological hillsides empty out and go genuinely dark. Greek reporting on where Athenians will not go after sunset names this belt of hills, and the Hellenic Police 2026 patrol plan names Filopappou, immediately adjacent, as a target sector.
What to watch for
- The unlit archaeological footpaths over the Hill of the Nymphs, the Pnyx and Filopappou after sunset — Greek reporting lists this belt of hills among the places treated as no-go at night
- Filopappou is a named target sector in the Hellenic Police 24/7 micro-crime patrol plan for 2026
- Pickpocketing in the tourist zone directly below at Thiseio and Monastiraki, where arrests are concentrated
- The archaeological sites gate and empty out, leaving no one around to help
Staying here
Very few lets exist here. If you take one, treat it as a Thiseio or Ano Petralona stay and use the lit street routes home rather than cutting across the hill paths after dark.
Reputation against reality. The hill is completely safe and heavily visited by day — it is a standard sunset spot. The warning is strictly about unlit archaeological paths after dark, and it applies to the whole western hills belt, not to this address in particular.
