Attiki scores 15 out of 100 for property crime — high crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 4,537 people at 16,579 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
A working transport knot rather than a destination: Attiki is where Metro Line 2 meets Line 1, on Liosion, with the trolleybus depot taking up a whole block. The square is the only open public space for streets around and does a Saturday street market; Remoundi and the streets off it still hold a run of neoclassical facades under decades of neglect. Residents are a mix of long-standing Greek households and migrant families who arrived from the 1990s.
Once the interchange traffic drops the square empties and reads as dark and unowned, and it is one of the named drug-dealing spots in the current police plan.
No reason to book. It is genuinely well connected and cheap, but it has no evening life of its own, and the walk from the station exit to a flat after 22:00 is the part visitors regret.
Reputation against reality. Often bracketed with 'lower Kolonos' in guidebook warnings. The square itself is ordinary by day — market stalls, pensioners, school runs — and the warning applies to the late hours and to specific dark corners, not the district.
