Property crime in Omonia

Ομόνοια · District

Modelled estimate — how it is made
5/100

By type of crime

Omonia scores 5 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for property crime — high crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Omonia has no police figures of its own. Its estimate starts from Athens's rate — Athens scores 28 for property crime — and is adjusted for documented local reporting about Omonia. An estimated 9,359 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Omonia is actually like

Fine by day, care after darkThe note names what changes after dark and where; by day the usual precautions apply.

Omonia is central Athens's transport and commercial hinge: a two-line metro interchange where Panepistimiou, Stadiou, Athinas, Piraeus and Agiou Konstantinou meet. The square was rebuilt with a fountain and new lighting under the city's 'Omonia as it was' plan, and branded hotels have moved back onto it. What people mean by 'Omonia', though, is usually the grid of narrow streets behind it.

After dark

After the shutters come down, the side streets change, not the avenues. Greek press reporting has repeatedly documented open dealing and street sex work on and around Sokratous, Menandrou, Geraniou and Agiou Konstantinou.

What to watch for

  • Chain-snatching: Omonia recorded the most chain-snatching cases of any central Athens area in 2026 - 37 incidents, 17 arrests (Hellenic Police figures, Sept 2026)
  • Open drug dealing on the narrow streets north and west of the square - Sokratous, Menandrou, Geraniou, Sofokleous - named repeatedly in Greek reporting and in police gang files
  • Street sex work and injecting drug use on Sokratous after dark (Newsbeast on-the-ground report)
  • Omonia metro station itself is a named pickpocketing hotspot alongside Syntagma and Monastiraki

Staying here

Skip it for a first trip. Rates are low and the transport unbeatable, but you arrive and leave through the roughest blocks in the centre. Syntagma, Monastiraki or Koukaki cost a little more and spare you that.

Reputation against reality. Reputation and reality diverge in both directions. The square itself is much better than its 2010s reputation - repaved, fountain back, chain hotels investing - and the main avenues are ordinary busy city streets at any hour. But the two or three narrow streets behind it are genuinely bad and have not improved; the Mayor of Athens said in January 2026 that 'central streets cannot become drug markets'. Judging Omonia by the square flatters it; judging it by Sokratous damns the whole district unfairly.
