Δημοτική Κοινότητα Βραχναιίκων · District

Modelled estimate — how it is made
57/100

By type of crime

Vrachneika scores 57 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for violent crime — average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Vrachneika has no police figures of its own. Its estimate is Patras's rate — Patras scores 47 for violent crime — and the 10 points between them come from how the model shares Patras's total out, not from anything measured in Vrachneika. It is home to about 2,664 people (2021 census).

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Vrachneika is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

The seat of its own municipal unit, a coastal town on the southern shore road out of Patras, about 12 km from the city centre (11 km in a straight line from Plateia Georgiou), with a permanent population, a beach and a summer-house belt. The community had 2,908 residents at the 2021 census: 2,640 in Vrachneika, 199 in Drosthena and 69 in Moiraiika. It has a primary school, rebuilt after earthquake damage and fully open again in 2016, a lower-secondary school since 1977 and an upper-secondary school since 1981; the 1993 and 2008 earthquakes brought down many old houses. City buses have linked it with Patras since 1930 and today run on routes 501 and 505, and the suburban railway stops at Vrachneika. The municipal street-market regulation lists no market in the Vrachnaiika unit; the nearest is Paralia's, on Friday mornings. It is one of the few outlying settlements with a documented crime profile: police name it among the consistently high-risk zones for residential burglaries, and a coastal burglary ring worked it in 2025-26.

After dark

Quiet out of season, busier along the shore in summer. Empty second homes are the recurring target rather than people on the street.

What to watch for

  • Residential burglary — Vrachneika is on the police high-risk list
  • Holiday homes left empty; a ring hit coastal houses here in morning hours
  • Unlit stretches of the shore road

Staying here

Pleasant for a summer seaside stay with a car. Around 20 minutes' drive south of the centre, so workable for an Italy ferry if you allow time to reach the South Port.
