Syntagma scores 31 out of 100 for violent crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 10,255 people at 16,579 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
Syntagma is the political and transport centre of Athens: Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on one side, the National Garden behind, and Ermou running west to Monastiraki as the main shopping street. Every metro line reaches it, including the direct airport link. It is where the changing of the guard happens, where the big hotels are, and where every major Greek demonstration ends.
Lit, policed and busy late - restaurants on the arcades, people crossing between Plaka and Kolonaki. The square's flanks and the Ermou end quieten after the shops shut but stay well trafficked.
The most convenient base in Athens if transport matters - the airport train from the door, everything walkable. It is expensive and noisy, and on protest days the metro station may close. Excellent for short trips and business, less charming than Plaka.
Reputation against reality. Syntagma reads in headlines as 'the riot square', because that is where television cameras go. In practice the disorder is confined to specific announced dates and to the strip in front of Parliament; the rest of the time it is an ordinary, heavily policed European capital square. The realistic traveller risk here is a pickpocket on the airport train, not a protest.
