Νέος Κόσμος · District

Modelled estimate — how it is made
31/100

By type of crime

Neos Kosmos scores 31 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for violent crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Neos Kosmos has no police figures of its own. Its estimate starts from Athens's rate — Athens scores 23 for violent crime — and is adjusted for documented local reporting about Neos Kosmos. An estimated 16,601 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Neos Kosmos is actually like

Fine by day, care after darkThe note names what changes after dark and where; by day the usual precautions apply.

Neos Kosmos is a working, mixed district below Mets and across Syngrou from Koukaki, built on 1920s Armenian and Asia Minor refugee settlement and decades of state housing. It has genuinely improved: the Onassis Stegi, the EMST contemporary art museum and the Neos Kosmos Theatre are all here, alongside car repair shops, cheap food and a metro and tram interchange.

After dark

The Syngrou Avenue corridor is the weak point: fast six-lane traffic, adult clubs and long pedestrian underpasses that are unpleasant to use alone after dark. The inner residential grid away from Syngrou is ordinary and quiet.

What to watch for

  • The pedestrian underpasses under Leoforos Syngrou near Panteion University — site of a documented June 2026 incident in which a man followed a woman through them while indecently exposed, arrested afterwards on Lagoumitzi Street
  • Adult night venues on Leoforos Syngrou, where police have raided and made arrests over the procurement of women for prostitution
  • Fast six-lane traffic on Syngrou and Kallirois with long distances between safe crossings
  • Lambrakis Hill (Lofos Lampraki) is unlit and empty after dark

Staying here

Good value and very well connected, and a reasonable pick for a second visit or a longer stay. Less suitable for a first-time visitor, a solo traveller walking home late, or anyone whose route runs through the Syngrou underpasses.

Reputation against reality. Its old blue-collar reputation lags well behind reality in the northern half, but the Syngrou frontage genuinely does behave differently from the neighbourhood behind it.
